I wrote this one a couple of weeks back. I tried to make it flow with the original song, and I kept some of the lines in tact from the original, as it works better this way. Anyway it's just for fun. I hope yall like it.
Riding on the City of New Orleans
CNICentral, afternoon rail.
A P42 and eight or so cars behind her.
It’s 1:45 I think it’s time to set sail.
As we start this northbound odyssey,
The train pulls out of NOUPT,
Picking up speed as we watch the bayous fly bye.
Passing Pass Manchac in the blink of an eye.
The dog at Amite let out cry.
Goodbye Louisiana, goodbye.
Hello America, how are ya?
I say my work on this rail is far from done.
Yes my name is still the City of New Orleans.
So climb aboard, sit back and have some fun.
Oh the moon is shining on the Superliner coaches.
The passengers are enjoying a mighty fine meal.
Almost to Memphis, just about half way to go.
As we do 79 over the road of steel.
But by the time we reach Newburg we’re running late.
And it’s surely making some people irate.
Oh I wish we had a better dispatcher today.
And the Genesis locos are doing overtime.
As we pass mile marker 769.
Good morning Illinois.
Champaign’s just a mile away
Hello America, how are ya?
I say my work on this rail is far from done.
Yes my name is still the City of New Orleans.
It takes nearly twenty hours to complete this run.
So sad to say our journey is just about over.
As the old saying goes, all good times must end.
The Sears Tower, dominating the skyline.
Chicago Union Station, just around the bend.
And all the passengers are gathering their things.
Making sure they have their hats, purses, and rings.
While the locomotive blows its horn once more.
But I’m sitting back, enjoying it all.
As we finally get our clearance to highball.
Oh the City is a legend of railroad yore.
Hello America, how are ya?
I say my work on this rail is far from done.
Yes my name is still the City of New Orleans.
I have a feeling that this adventure has just begun.
