I did not realize that! I thought the Dining Car or CCC was always next to the sleepers!

I found that puzzling as well, but jis told me that the City of New Orleans trainset is turned at CHI for the same-day departure of the Texas Eagle. With the need to have a through cars to LAX three days a week, the set is arranged to allow for the split at SAS. Apparently that is also done on the days the split is not made.

I didnt know that either! I do know that the Eagle/CONO is a run thru consist, hadley and I have discussed this several times on various threads, but the fact that a sleeper is carried on the rear is news to most of us! I know jis knows his stuff but even though I'm not from Missouri I need someone on the scene to verify this is the case everyday! Jay are you there??? :help:

I can tell you that #5800 was the last car in the CONO consist last Thursday, 7/21 (there was a closed Sightseer behind us being shuttled from the Sunset to Chicago and on the Beech Grove). I was on #5800, as was AlanB, jis, and a gaggle of others.

It looks there there are three coaches. I probably lost count as I was staggering through the cars on that lovely section of track in Mississippi.

#5800 was also the last car when I rode NOL-CHI on Mon. 7/18. I was quite surprised to have to go through several coaches and the lounge to get to the diner.

We also, for some odd & unknown reason, had an extra SSL 33030 on the rear of the sleeper.

SSL = SightSeer Lounge.

CCC = Cross Country Cafe; but being used only as a dinner. The cafe was in the SSL.

Whooooo....hold the phone a minute. I've seen the sleeper tacked on the hind end when the #22/422 sleeper goes B/O or is due inspection. It saves a lot of cable disconnects, time, etc. I'm going to get an opinion from the horse's mouth in about an hour. I shall return, refreshments or otherwise. :lol: :lol: :lol:

P.S. Far be it from CUS to reposition the car when it gets back there. :help:

Well gang it appears my Amtrak garu took a personal day off. He is enjoying refreshments somewhere around Lake Pontchatrain. I will call him first thing in the morning and settle this once and for all. :help:

OK...here's the scoop...the regular revenue sleeping car has been riding the rear end for the last month. It seems that switching ops in SAS have changed up and the last two cars on #21 go to #1. Not sure if the switch crew has been cut off in SAS but sounds like an economy move to me.

Thanks Jay! Sounds like they MAY be getting set up for the long rumoured Daily Eagle/Sunset if UP has come down on their outrageous demands??? :help: And since the Sun is over the Yardarm most places, time for "refreshments"! :lol: :lol: :lol:

On the northbound City of New Orleans, the #5800 car is at the end of the train and it is not next to the CCC. It has the Sightseer lounge and two coaches between the car and the CCC. I'm not sure if that is the same arrangement on southbound #59.

Wasn't that way when I last rode it northbound. In fact it was the same consist as the day before I arrived on southbound. They just turned it and no cars were changed. When did they start putting the sleeper on the rear end?
