What is there policy on stuff in your carry on's? Would we be able to take some snack crackers and maybe a couple of bottles of water. I have searched there website over but haven't seen anything about this. I actually had thought about taking a backpack to Washington DC for the purpose of always having a light snack and drink.
You can pack a cooler full of all of the food and drink (no alcohol in coach but you can drink in the lounge)
That is a little misleading. You can PURCHASE alcoholic drinks in the lounge and DRINK IT THERE but you cannot consume any alcohol you brought with you unless you are a sleeper passenger consuming it in the sleeper compartment.
That's what I meant but didn't communicate properly.

Speaking of communicate.... some of the people around here should read their own threads and acknowledge help and/or answers when they get them - just a pet peeve of mine and I'm not a noob to forums.

My wife and I will be taking the Crescent from Birmingham Al. to Washington Dc in mid October. My question is how hard is it going to be for us to get two coach seats together? I called Amtrak and they said it would be pretty full coming out of New Orleans.
I took the Crescent from New Orleans to Newark, NJ last November and rode in the coach. As I recall there were a lot of seats in Birmingham. In Atlanta the train really filled up although a number of people got off too. but before Atlanta everything was OK. AMTRAK calls this a reserved seat train but that only means it limits its tickets to the number of seats it has; you do not get an assigned seat before you board. I could take any seat I wanted to; however there is an attendant and he will make a note of your seat so you can't really change seats after you have chosen one. If you were to get on at Birmingham and could not find two seats together you could ask the attendant if he could move you together when the chance came. People get off and on at each station.

However, I have to say the coach seats were uncomfortable. They felt like the upholstery was just worn out. I occasionally ride the northeast corridor line, regular coach (not acela) from New York to Providence and the seats have always been comfortable. I was surprised at how uncomfortable they were.

I agree. Going north the train should have plenty of room when you get on in Birmingham.
