Well lookee here,On these trains the pot roast is only $9.00, on the SWC it's $22.50
Based on a recent braised flat iron stew meat meal on the LSL, I would go for the San Juaquin's pot roast sight unseen, even at $22.50.

These tray meals must be about the best kept secret in CA. Because when I asked the conductor what was good to order, he said, "Go for the burger!" There was no sign of any tray meals anywhere on the menu that I saw, and *the man* certainly didn't recommend them. *shrug*

^^Some of the California Cars have reclining seats, but it seems that many of them don't. I'm thinking that that is the biggest difference between the two major orders for California Cars.

EDIT - According to this Train Orders thread, reclining seats are one of the differences between the first California Car order and subsequent orders (including the Surfliner coaches).
Actually, they do recline, after a fashion. There's a lever under the seat cushion, similar to the lever under an automotive driver's seat. Pull it, and the seat cushion will move forward and the seatback will recline slightly, similar to how a Superliner bedroom couch reclines. If you don't already know the lever's there, there's no obvious way to know the lever's there!

Back in the day, the San Joaquin had a chef who changed the menu regularly. Hardly a secret, since Chef Mario's picture was on the menu!

OK, I was able to pull the San Joaquin/Capitol Corridor menu that became effective on June 23, 2009.

The tray meals are indeed gone. In fact, San Joaquin no longer has any menu items unique to its route. On the other hand, Capitol Corridor has four menu items that differ from San Joaquins (including non-alcoholic beer, premium wine at two levels, Campbell's® Soup-at-Hand and a pot roast sandwich).

Of those items, I would probably take the pot roast sandwich and premium beer.

Ah so long the good ol' days. I remember a photo in an Amtrak brochure from the '80's or early '90's of a San Joaquin going through a field in the central valley and there was a full service Superliner dining car in the consist!

Well that sucks, do they still have the box lunches to go with the suggestion of taking them on the motorcoach?

The box lunches also appear to be gone, but the hummus kit has remained (as has the beloved jumbo cheese pretzel).

There definitely are a lot of burritos on this menu -- breakfast, bean & cheese, vegetarian and chicken.

I emailed Amtrak California and they sent me a copy of the current menu. It really sucks! They dropped everything I was planning on getting.

(edit: removed links to pics since the PDF is now available)

Can you attach a pdf to these threads?

At least they still have the Hummus Kit :)

I will have to give it a try, sad they don't have the cheese & crackers like they did on the SWC last time I rode.
Thankfully, the cheese & crackers are still on the menu, but they appear to have moved it. It is the last item under "Burgers, Salads & More."

Still, not bad at $3.25.
