Almost all my California train rides in the past 3 years get delayed at least an hour or more consistently. This particularly true for San Joaquin line. This line is run by Caltrans, which is notorious for its inefficiency. Train officials consistently blame it on freight trains! High speee rail would have resolve most of these issues. However, there has been strong resistance to high speeed rail because some special interest groups don't want to see high speed train system to eat in their profits and status quo control of the market. Effective these people are contributing to deadly pollution in the Central Valley and keeping California from moving forward with the rest of developed world. Even a developing country like China already has high speed rail!

China may not be a good example because their government is not a democracy.

Turkey started building high speed rail in 2003.

High speed rail service in Turkey started in 2009.

California and Turkey have about the same population density. Turkey has about 2x more land area and about 2x more people.

If California ever gets around to actually do the high speed rail, it would be a deadly mistake to let the chinese to build it!

Yes, and a Corvette never, ever, gets stuck in rush hour traffic on the LA Freeway simple because its capable of high speed travel. :D

I can just envision the high speed passenger train constantly blasting its horn as it is stuck behind a slow moving freight train.

I've often wondered about countries with high-speed passenger rail service if:

• they share the rails with freight trains and, if so,

• how many freight trains there and

• which type of train has priority routing

And then there's this wondering: Any country have high speed freight trains?

NO! High speed rail system is dedicated to passenger trains only! No freight trains to be allowed - at least that's the plan. That's one of the reasons for high speed rails in the first place!

Germany has a few dedicated high speed lines. But the ice trains in lots of places run along with freights. And passenger gets the signal most of the time. Last time I rode from Halle to berlin I saw ten to fofteen freights we passed

And the freights as a rule run on electric lokos, operated by DB Schenker, the freight subsidiary of DB.

Freight trains in the rest of the world are a lot shorter then US trains.
