Ron Paul is the only one of them that makes sense.

Thing is, his first budget cutting move would be ending the military engagements overseas.

But yes, as he and one of the other posters on this thread mentioned, the usual attitude is "Yes, we have a budget problem, but you better not cut my program!"

What a bunch of maroons.... (in the picture, not you guys!)

Valid point, I was only confining my remarks to the current President and the 111th Congress. ;)
I normally care more about ideas than spelling or grammer, but since you're into calling people idiots simply because you disagree with them, maybe spelling the word "moron" correctly would be a nice touch. Unless you, in fact, meant to say that the group was lost somewhere, as in marooned on a desert island.
No! Tell me it ain't so! You did not walk into that trap now, did you? :p Ever heard of Bugs Bunny? ;)

And not to mention that grammer ought to be grammar while we are at it. :p

Wow. Seriously?

Sorry if the predisposition of assuming you fall into the category of "You must be a liberal to love trains" category is inaccurate. But to make a blanket statement about 7 individuals hardly seems to be thinking on one's own. I'm sure that if there were 7 democrats on a stage, I wouldn't just just call them all maroons because they enjoy spending my money.
The irony is delicious. You castigate me for making a blanket statement about 7 individuals while simultaneously judging my ability to think on my own based on one statement. Bravo, sir.

How about we get back on the topic of trains before you go off making any other asinine assumptions about me and where my opinions come from.

My taste ran more toward Rocky and Bullwinkle. And, gee, I did misspell grammar. I feel like such a maroon. :p

Maroones are different than morons - you need to go back to your basic Bugs Bunny cartoon days and see how Bugs used the term "Maroons"! I normally care more about ideas/concepts than spelling or grammar; however Bugs Bunny is an icon!!!

And now for something completely different...

My take on the N.D. mission to DC was to find out what can be done to keep the EB running through Grand Forks, Devil's Lake - the town and NOT the lake itself :eek:hboy: - and Rugby.

Maybe they were thinking that hot air from down this way (I'm just outside DC) could help speed evaporation on the lake, solving the lake's growing problem without the need for outflow.

Oh well, at least hopper toilets are not to blame.

At the end of the day we all have our maroon moments. I seem to have those more often than many other learned folks on this forum though. :-/ Have you noticed how many times I have to edit anything that I post before I can get it right? :p

I don't know about that, Jis. I seem to be running at or near 100% in terms of having to edit my posts. I've been "marooned" most of the time!!!

Count me in with the constant edits crowd. Frankly I prefer forums that give you a grace period before they stamp your post with the edited flag.

I'll agree with that. Sometimes I don't catch a simple typo until after I've already posted.

I agree too. I catch typos after I've posted all the time. And have had to edit and re-edit up to half a dozen times before I finally get it right.

Keep hoping that Amtrak Joe comes through for Our Side, the Prez seems to be MIA...
This is what's troubling me about this whole situation with the House Republicans' vociferous attacks on Amtrak. While they make Amtrak their expedient, political punching bag, there is a deafening silence from the White House and Democratic leadership. Why aren't they defending Amtrak when it needs their political support more than ever right now? I wrote three letters last night including one to Obama requesting that the Democratic leadership snaps out of its trance and starts vocalizing its support for Amtrak with the same intensity that the Republicans are hand wringing over its demise.

Yes, I've seen forum software that allows exactly that. In fact, Flyertalk's vBulletin software does allow a "grace" period where you can make edits without edit stamp showing up.

Alas at present, it is not an option with our Invision software. :( Perhaps in some future release it will be an option, but at present there is little that we can do. Sorry!

If calling a group of people "maroons" was good enough for Bugs Bunny, it's good enough for me!!!!!
I'm glad someone got the joke.

What can I say??? Bugs Bunny and all his Warner Bros. pals were a very important part of my formative years!!!!!!!
What's up Doc? Many of us "got it" as soon as we wead it! Bugs is classic, and in some cartoons rode passenger trains (also featured in Road Runner vs. Wile E. Coyote 'toons).

ON topic, the meeting was to evaluate the Devil's Lake problem. Inclusion of the political big cigars evidently is reaping benefits, too,,,

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - U.S. Sens. Kent Conrad and John Hoeven says BNSF Railway and Amtrak each have pledged to pay one-third of the cost of

Actually when the reports of the damage to railroad infrastructure (including station facilities) started rolling in after Hurricane Katrina, I thought at that time "The Sunset Limited won't operate east of New Orleans again."

I am surprised that they haven't called a spade and spade, opting instead for an indefinate 'suspension' but I'm not surprised that the Sunset East hasn't returned.
I felt the same way about the SSL east of New Orleans after Katrina. But there's a huge difference between that segment and the ND segment on the EB.

The North Dakota situation is a relatively short stretch of track right in the middle of a top tier route. Whereas the "suspended" SSL segment was the

eastern end of an under performing transcon. It was still possible to run what would be a rationale train even without the New Orleans-Jacksonville

stretch.

I don't think that's necessarily true. CSX (?) had the transcon East of NOL fixed to top notch condition within two years after it was destroyed. Obviously the Freight thought very highly of the line. The decision to indefinitely suspend the SSL was and is 100% Amtrak's.

The other big difference between the EB situation and the SSL East situation is that political support for the SSL East in the area that it runs through is luke warm at best, whereas the politicians at every level in ND are willing to go to bat for the EB.

Also, the CSX route while restored, is hardly a top notch route before or after the storm, in terms of overall importance in the network and load carried goes.

Lukewarm? Every time I go onto Amtrak's facebook page, there's always someone saying "bring back the Sunset East!"

One problem is that the train goes through the edges of Mississippi and Alabama, not right through them. The Crescent probably goes through more congressional/state legislative districts than the Sunset East does.

Are any of the people you see on facebook currently employed as politicians from states where the Sunset Limited once traveled?

So which influential politician from Mississippi or Alabama even knows how to spell "Sunset" in the context of a passenger train? ;)
