Other routes do not have to shut down every single year for half of the schedule due to track maintenance. The Crescent has been doing this since at least 2000.
The Boston section of the Lake Shore gets cancelled and bustituted between Boston and Albany annually in the Fall for a CSX maintenance blitz, too.

My impression is the Eagle route gets heavy work quite often. But it's interesting to me that I can't recall any major blitz like this on the ex- Capitol Limited route or on the NS portion of The Pennsylvanian.

Currently on the Crescent Southbound. Excellent crew. Best I’ve encountered in a long time. All pleasant. In the baggage dorm. Sad how they just let these relatively new cars deteriorate without internal maintenance. Filthy, too. If a hotel can turn over in a few hours, these things can be cleaned by a dedicated cleaning crew or service. Clearly it’s not an Amtrak priority.

That's sad to see, I have been wanting to take a trip in a V2 car but apparently some of them are already looking worn out. I know the equipment should be built tough, but the way I see some passengers treating airline seats, lounge furnishings, etc I have to wonder if people were raised in a barn with no regard to treating things like they were their own property.

It's quite possible that the duct tape on the table was put there by a previous customer, not by Amtrak. I taped down the laminate on a table in an H-room because it was separated and curled up as it is in your photo, and presented a sharp edge.

IMHO, the poor condition of the VL2's is not entirely the fault of Amtrak or passenger abuse, but rather due to the use of plastic where there was sturdier materials in the old cars. For example, the frame surrounding the table stow slot is cracked on many cars because it's a natural place for passengers to support themselves when standing up from the seat, and the plastic they used is inadequate to support that weight. The frame was steel in the VL1's.

I’m not talking about the corrosion. I’m talking about complete filth. The table wouldn’t even go all the way down in its setting because of the disconnecting laminate. The sleeping car attendant indicated that Amtrak pays for a cleaning crew whenever they go into the yard and even they said they have no idea what they’re paying for because nothing is ever clean. This look good to you?

Thanks for posting those photos which are quite informative.

I'm booked to travel on February 20th from New Orleans to Atlanta. When I booked the trip it is noted that it will be by Amtrak bus that will take 10 hours and 30 minutes. If I booked the same trip on February 28th, I'd be booked on Train #20, the Crescent (by the way, taking 12 hours and 45 minutes). Does anyone know what is going on? Is it possible that my trip by bus might be substituted with The Crescent if the track work(?) is finished earlier than projected?

Crescent 19 / 17 Jan on today the 18th took over an hour delay at CP Howell due to CSX blocking Howell.. Unfortunately, I believe that NS will be charged for this delay.
Have no why CSX blocked the CP but usually it is waiting for a new crew to allow train to continue. CSX tries to not change crews there so when a crew goes HOS there may be a problem finding a crew..

Yep! Another lovely surprise came over a couple hours ago. #1 canceled on me for tomorrow morning. “You can go in two days or you can get a refund”. Thanks so much. 🙄
