I made a stupid mistake today and I'm looking for advice. I have booked a trip from NYP to the US station in Niagara Falls and then by complete accident booked a hotel on the Canadian side. We arrive at 10:45pm. What would be the best way to get to the Canadian side so late at night? I was thinking of getting a cab to the Rainbow bridge, walking across and then once cleared through C&I, catching a cab to the hotel. Do you think this is viable? What is the possibility of catching a cab at that time of night?

Thank you in advance for any advice!

By any chance, are you taking the Maple Leaf (ML) or one of the Empire Service trains? If the ML, call to rebook your ticket to Niagara Falls, Ontario! (The ML is the only Amtrak train that crosses the border there.) If it's one of the Empire Service trains, I don't know of the taxi situation, but I think it will be easy to get one to go to the border/bridge. The station is a few miles from the border.

Any way you could switch your Train Rez from NYP to the Maple Leaf which would take you to the VIA Station on the Ontario Side of the River around 5:00PM? (it's by the Whirlpool Bridge which Taxis cant use) It would still be Light, you would go through Canadian Customs and Immigration inside the Station and there are Plenty of Taxis to take you to your Hotel (the GGreyhound Station is acroos the Street from the VIA Station) Its about a MIle and a Half to where most of the Hotels/Falls/Tourist Stuff is Located! If you ride to the Amtrak Station on an Empire Service Train it is about 3 Miles to Town/Border,youd have to take a Taxi (Expensive) then youd have to go through C&I @ the Rainbow Bridge, cross the Bridge either Walking or via Cab to your Hotel!

Hoinestly riding the Maple Leaf is the best Way to GO if at all Possible! ;)

The OP may not wish to or be able to ride the Maple Leaf as that departs NYP at 7:15 AM whereas their current

train departs NYP at 1:20 PM. That's a significant difference.

I'm not an expert in taxis in the NFL area, but I know in Detroit, cabs cross the border all the time. I don't see any

particular reason why this wouldn't be the case in Niagara Falls, where tourists routinely wish to visit both sides of

the border. I don't know that it's a given that the OP would have to walk across the bridge and get a new taxi.

I don't know about Detroit, and I really don't know about Niagara Falls, NY, but I have heard that many cabs in NFL can not (or will not) cross the bridge to the Canadian side.
True this! As Ive said, All things considered, if at all possible, take the Maple Leaf from NYP to the Canadian Side, it's the Way to Roll!! ;)

Sounds to me like this thread could really use someone with first-hand experience. :)

Just walk over to where the taxis are waiting and say you need to cross over to Niagara Falls, Ontario. A few of the cabbies may decline for various reasons, but one of them will help you out. It's been a few years, so I cannot speak about the fare.

Enjoy the Falls!

Thank you for the replies. Yes time is an issue, hence the later train. We are on an Empire train. I guess we are just going to have to hold thumbs for a taxi to be available to take us to the falls that late at night. (Don't need one to cross the border, as we can walk across and get another one on the other side) I guess we are in for an adventure :)

I have walked from the station across the border (it was a long walk like 2.5 hour walk) after arriving on the 10:20 New York departure (not the 1:20). Canadian customs was totally fine with me crossing. The Niagara Falls station though isn't great for walking out of.

This is a TripReport I wrote about walking (scroll down to the bottom, it was the end of a long day of traveling).

If one waits a couple of years, the new station that is under construction by the old Custom House by the bridge, when it goes into service, is right by the border. :)
