Am booked on the CS from emy to lax in early Oct and was wondering which side of the train would give the best views? Any ideas?

Additionally, we will stay overnight in Los Angeles near the Amtrak station before taking the Pacific Surfliner to San Diego the next morning. Any decent hotels near the Los Angeles Amtrak station that anyone is familiar with that are decent? thanks.

The Metro Plaza hotel is a couple of blocks from LAX. I've stayed there before, it's definitely good for one or 2 nights.

I've stayed at the Metro Plaza many times. It is a perfectly decent hotel, but basic. If you are looking for a decent night's sleep in a clean and safe hotel, it will more than suffice. It's also pretty much across the street from Phillipe's.

I recently stayed at the Red Pagoda Motel in Chinatown. I did this with some apprehension as it was only $49/night on Priceline ... I was pleasantly surprised. It is on the outer edge of Chinatown near Dodger Staduim but I walked from Union Station at night having also arrived on the Starlight. You could take the Gold Line one stop which puts you within a couple of blocks, and before 6:30pm the "D" Dashbus (Chinatown) picks you up in front of Union Station and drops you right by the motel. It is a motel with free parking and outside entrance to the rooms. My room was clean and fresh, no bugs, quiet and had a large TV and fridge. There is free WiFi. I will totally go back there again. There was a variety of clientele, mostly youngish.

I like the Miyako in LA-

Also, day rooms on the Coast Starlight can be a real bargain- less than 100.00 for a roomette, with meals and Parlor car access. It's a nice trip, if a slow one. Even with the bus leg from Bakersfield the San Joaquin is faster.

Went with the roomette. The access to the parlor car and three meals for two of us seems like a no brainer for the price. Thanks for all the replys.

Day rooms on the Coast Starlight, what is it, and how does it work?

The wife and my self have stayed at the metro Plaza. Found it worth the money, not a 4 star but very clean and close to LAUS.

It just means that you brought a sleeper room for the day and get the assocaiated perks, like meals, lounge access if there is one, and in this case the Pacific Parlour Car.
