OPEN - if they are closed, you cannot see outside.

If Awake I leave them Open to sightsee, when I actually want to sleep I Close them since I like it Dark as I can get it when Sleeping! (The Bat Cave! )I find the View from the Top Bunk in a Viewliner Roomette to be better than any Bedroom or a the Bottom Bunk in a Superliner!

Please tell us if you prefer sleeping in your roomette or bedroom with the curtains open or closed at night and why?
Open. That is the beauty of sleeping in the upper bunk on a single level train. You can watch the night go right past your window. My first trip in a viewliner, happened to be the night of a full moon and I will never forget that view!

In 2011 I went SWC #3 and somewhere in Kansas was sleeping with the curtains open. I woke up in the middle of the night and we went from the stars at night shining bright to a fantastic thunder and lightening storm that I would have miss if they had been closed, or I had slept all night :) which made me wonder with all of the lightening --- I am in a metal rail car, on metal wheels or metal tracks...am I going to die?

Closed, unfortunately. Otherwise I'd spend all night looking out the window.

Open - for the view outside!

I don't know - but what a way to go!

(There has to be some insulation between the car and trucks/wheels!)

HA! When I first looked at the topic I thought you meant the curtains on the door, not the outside windows. Does anyone sleep with those curtains open?

I enjoy seeing all of the small towns in the middle of the night. I usually wake up two or three times in the evening, and just look out the window for a while.

Only when I use the toilet In a Viewliner roomette! I want to "share the view"!

We'd have to crane our necks pretty severely to see you up in the Penthouse! :giggle:

Closed--when sleeping I prefer it as dark as possible. For me that's one of the great perks of a room over coach, that and the silence.

Besides, it's a fun game to open the curtain in the morning (once the sun is up) and try to guess where you are (and how late you are).

Well, in Coach, I like having the other people's windows open, that way I can see out- but I want my curtains closed so I can lay my head against the window and not be cold.

Closed. Just simple privacy concerns, nothing more. God forbid I get up to use the "facilities" in the bedroom and we're

stopped at a utility or other kind of stop. And on the Auto Train, there's a rather long one in Florence, SC, right at the mid

point (i.e. crew changes, refueling, where the train sets meet (theoretically), etc.).

When I'm awake, I leave them open during daylight.

Depends on whether I am in an upper or lower level roomette. If in an upper level (which I prefer), open. If in a lower level, closed. The lower level roomette windows are right at eye level for anyone on the platform at any overnight stopes.

Never having taken a sleeper ride on Amtrak I can't say for Viewliners and Superliner bedrooms specifically, but in general while on a train I like to have curtains open. I have kept curtains open on overnight coach travel on Superliners, and also when I traveled by open-plan sleepers in trains in India, I have always kept the curtains on the windows open at night, but curtains by the corridor closed. That way the corridor lights to not reflect off the window and its a nice view outside. My favorite part of overnight train travel is waking up in the morning and looking out the window first thing, not knowing where in the country I am, trying to figure it out while half asleep :) Once on an overnight journey by non air-conditioned sleeper class in India I decided to keep the whole window open overnight but it turned out to be so cold and noisy that the fellow passengers forced me to close it around midnight

I marked CLOSED since until after I voted, I assumed it was INSIDE curtains. At night the OUTSIDE curtains are always left open. About the only chance of someone seeing you is if you are in the Lower of a Viewliner or in a Lower Room on a Superliner.

Exactly! I unfortunately cannot sleep with too much light about, so I close both the inside and outside curtains when I sleep.

When I wake up, however, it's always nice to be waking up on the right side of a Northbound train (most recently #20) just as the sun is coming up, and trying to figure out where you are before rolling over to consult the GPS (or GPS app on the phone).

Outside curtains open. Always. Well, except on those occaisions... ...which are more frequent in a Viewliner...

I make my room as dark as possible - a combination of newspapers and shoes by the crack under the door, coats on hangers, suitcases - whatever else it takes to block light coming in from the car - the reward is a better night view to sleep by.

Aww shoot... I voted closed by accident.. I meant to click open!!   Well how about this... I'll sleep with my door curtains closed. :) Windows open. :) My curtains are cracked at the wall so my eyes can see out the window, the rest is shut. So they are 90% closed how about that. :)
