I know I have asked this, but my pea brain won't remember and I cannot find the topic:

I am in a roomette leaving NOL on Friday 5 June. Based on the schedule it appears I will receive two breakfasts, two lunches, and two dinners. I found menus on line, but what exactly is covered at each meal?

At breakfast you can have both juice and coffee/tea, one main entree and a side of sausage or bacon.

Lunch you get free non-alcoholic drinks, one entree, and desert.

Dinner you get free non-alcoholic drinks, a side salad, a roll, one entree (with veggie & starch if appropriate), and desert.

Thanks...and before this thread gets (ahem) off track...I know I tip as if I had paid for the items.

Another thing to keep in mind is that in sleepers, you can usually request and receive room service (same menu selection). That doesn't work well for breakfast if your room has not been made up (and it's possibly not fair to burden the sleeping car attendent with meal delivery while he or she is making up rooms in the morning). I like room service for two reasons. When traveling on a plane or train I am not overly social. With mandatory community seating in long distance train dining cars, you either meet people who are very enjoyable to converse with or the absolute opposite. Second, I have a large frame and while I can fit in booths, it's tight to get in and out. Unlike restaurants, you cannot request a table instead of a booth. Most sleeping car attendents graciously accomodate room service requests, and I always tip well for room service in appreciation. I often use room service for dinner, but not always.

We might be related. I don't care which booth is "supposed to be bigger", it ain't

In reality the Amtrak menu has never said soft drinks were included. I quote from the Amtrak menu, "All lunch entrees include coffee, tea or milk". I think that the soft drinks were asked for so often that Amtrak just allows it to be.

If you like soft drinks, only Pepsi products are served on Amtrak. No Coke or Dr Pepper!!

I think that's just if you're paying for it as a coach passenger. I found they provide iced tea to coach passengers ordering a lunch entree.

Of course, if you are paying for the meal in coach, you will be charged seperately for the soda.

When I am in coach I rarely buy a soda and just take the juice and milk that is included. They've even brought ice tea and milk if I have asked them and usually offer to refill them if I want.

When I am in sleeper, I will do the same thing but order the soda as well since I know it is included. I'll take the soda back to my room for later. I didn't know that you could order soda for breakfast in a sleeper and have it included. It makes sense though.

Alan and others may know for sure, but Amtrak used to allow sleeper passengers unlimited soft drinks with their room.

They've since stopped that but still allow soda to be included with your meal at no charge.

Unless something has changed in the past few months, apple and orange juice are provided for Sleeper pax (provided the SA hasn't rat holed the supply). It is offered at the coffee station in the center of the Sleeper.

They used to offer pepsi/sprite/etc too. They stopped because SCAs were making too much of it, uh, disappear.

This too, may also change in the future. Still nobody has come up with a concrete reason as to why soda is included with sleeper meals and not coach when it is listed as a pay for item on the menu.

You are correct. I might be wrong, but if I remember correctly the soft drinks were in an 8 oz can, not the 12 oz can. Also, I remember the basket of "goodies" that were offered at all times on numerous LD train trips. Really enjoyed the "goodies." On my recent CONO trip, the SCA did have a basket of "goodies" set out and filled at all times. I figured the SCA paid for it himself, as I do not see this anymore. It was a very nice touch.

Sorry, but Sprite is a Coke product and therefore never offered on an Amtrak train supplied from an Amtrak commissary. You might have seen Sierra Mist or Mountain Dew over the years, but never sprite. :)

Gotcha, ok, but I did receive free "sodas" in the sleeping car as recently at this past Christmas trip. All I had to do was ask.

I still get "sodas" in the sleeping car for free, I think it's just the people who abuse the quanity that don't, or, in some cases, another passenger has already bankrupted the trip. In more than one trip the SA has told me where they have them stockpiled. I don't think it's just because I tip well, it's because I tip when I get on board.

Amtrak officially eliminated sodas in the sleeping cars. They aren't stockpiled any place on the train, other than the dining car and the cafe car. And the LSA in the cafe can't give them away.

The amtrak policy has always been (AFIK) "Sleeping car passengers receive non-alcaholic beverages complimentary with meal." Since Pepsi products are non-alcaholic, they are included.

I have only seen one LSA many years ago enforce a "one can of soda per meal" policy. The last several times I have ridden sleeper passengers around me have been offered additional sodas during there meal. (I usually drink tea so this does not apply to me :)

Something that I have come to realize is every LSA and every sleeper attendant does things a little differently. If you board the train expecting the bare minimum, you have a really great chance of being pleasently surprised by an extra free drink or two, ice cream with your cake, and MAYBE friendly service :)

Last summer on the LSL, the lady in the lounge asked if i was from sleeper. When I said yes she gave me a free one. It has never happened on any other train and I never expected or asked for it.

Somestimes SA's in diners give me the whole quart of milk-- milk is very expensive and I love it, so when it's free on Amtrak I.. binge.

If the SA gets to know me well enough they just leave the quart on the table.

Happens in regular joints too-- ask for a glass of water, eventually the server gets tired of refilling my glass and just puts the pitcher on my table...
