I think they are laying a new track and replacing the current track (including some serious undercutting - deferred maintenance catchup) and replacing the signaling system in plus adding ACSES II. I don't know how the work is sequenced, and what else is involved, so it is hard for me to know for sure whether the length of time is reasonable or not..

I trust you know all that in detail since you sound so confidant. So could you please enlighten us? ;)

I said could, and I didn't realize that they were going to do all that work.It does seem more reasonable now.

They have already realigned the first track and replaced lots of the sleepers on it; rebuilt the right-of-way (subbase and formation) underneath where both tracks go (it was severely eroded in places and the embankment had to be rebuilt in some places; lots of backhoe and bulldozer work); rebuilt a lot of the drainage; relocated and replaced the signalling; and laid out the new track alignment with little flags. Also repaired a bunch of bridges. I think they've laid down underballast on the second track alignment now. Putting in the track is one of the last steps.

Umm, sleepers. A "Britishism" for ties, for those wondering. Some would be thinking the new sleeping cars are coming on line!! :hi:

BTW, according to posts at railroad.net, a Track Laying Machine is going to start putting down the second track between ALB and SDY this week. Will be at it for the next 8 weeks.
However, that isn't a CSX project bewteen NFL-ALB. That's entirely Amtrak's project.
