EMY-DEN one zone?

Thinking of maybe going one way on the CZ from EMY-DEN. I think this is one zone, although Denver seems to be right on the line. I don't have enough points for a family bedroom, but I have plenty of Chase Sapphire Preferred points that I can transfer. I value them at a penny per point, since $100 gift cards go for 10,000 points. Probably cheaper than buying points.

So would this be one zone? And if I did this, what about a car rental near the station, as well as getting to the airport?

Hertz(local) picked me up from the station along with 6 others off the CZ .

For any border city, if you‘re going west it‘s in the zone to the west of it and if you‘re going east it's in the zone to the east. This is if you start from a border city. If you end in one it's just the opposite. EMY to DEN is one zone!

EMY to ABQ or ELP or WPT are all the same one zone trips! :)

You can get to the airport by using the RTD Skyride bus, Route AF. It runs hourly (more often in peak times) and leaves from the new underground bus terminal at Union Station. The trip takes about 50 minutes with two stops en route. The cost is $11.

Cabs from downtown Denver to the airport are a flat rate $51 (plus tip).

Arrival time might be an issue. I think the location closes at 6 PM but the scheduled arrival time is 6:38. Enterprise has a nearby location that closes at 7 PM. I'm starting to think it might make more sense to rent at the airport, especially if we return by air. I know some of these places can leave a vehicle, but that sort of scares me if something goes wrong and I'm without a car.

Maybe I should search previous posts, but does bedroom mean a family bedroom or a bedroom with its own toilet/shower? We're a family of three with one child who is used to sleeping with the parents. The two bed configuration would work for us.

A "regular" bedroom has 2 berths, it's own bathroom and the 5 bedrooms are all on the upper level. The family bedroom has 4 berths (2 adult sized and 2 child sized), is on the lower level and does not have it's own toilet. However just down the hall on the lower level are 3 restrooms and the shower room. (There is also one public restroom on the upper level.) All access between cars is via the upper level only.

Both types of bedrooms are the same number of points, but the "standard" bedroom only allows two occupants with an AGR redemption. You would need an open sleeper ticket (the price should be the same as a low bucket coach fare) for the third person. With the family bedroom, the points would cover all three of you (the maximum occupancy is four).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have a "bedroom" it's probably one of the regular 2-berth bedrooms on the upper level. I think you have to specify that you want the "family bedroom" to get that one. The regular bedrooms are shown as A, B, C, D, or E; I don't recall what the family bedroom is (F? maybe). The roomettes are numbered.

Maybe for an AGR redemption, but on the website you can select the Family bedroom.

The number on the door to the Family Bedroom is #15 but its not a Roomette! (There are 14 Roomettes on a Superliner Sleeper!) The H Room is the Handicap Room ( it has a toilet and sink) and anyone can book it 2 weeks before departure if not booked by a passenger with a handicap, but on a Superliner its not very comfortable! On a Viewliner its the Best Room that Amtrak has!!!

Suggestion re:rental car.

We arrived on the CZ and had a downtown hotel for the night of arrival (Hyatt on price1ine for pretty cheap). The next morning, we picked up a rental car from Budget downtown which was walking distance from the hotel. There was no extra charge to drop the car at the airport when we flew out, and extra fees were much less since it was not an airport rental. Car rentals at the airport in Denver are crazy high.

I've done this exact thing in January and with Sapphire points. Transferring takes less than a minute once you get Chase on the line. It's 15k points each way for a roomette, or 25k points for a room. Gotta love those zone border cities.

I don't know about the rental cars though because I was visiting friends.

I got online to have a look. Seems really easy. Enter the AGR number twice, your exact name as registered with Amtrak, and then select points to transfer in 1,000 point increments.

I noted in another thread that I have some place to be the next morning, so picking up a rental car in the morning probably won't help.

For rental cars near Amtrak station, I use Enterprise -- about a 5 block walk to 22nd and Broadway. After mid-sept they usually have a promotion for a 3-day weekend rental (fri-mon) for a compact for $39 total price. This promotion is not offered at the airport. I have done this many times here and in the mountains, often with free upgrades to mid-size, full-size, even minivans.
