Typically I can be quite flexible, but my in-laws are coming from the UK for the journey. Their sleeper is still booked ok. But it means flexibility isn't an option this trip.Welcome to AU! Collectively there is a wealth of experience as well as 'problems experienced' with Amtrak's declining service. Your problem of being downgraded from a bedroom - the top tier of accommodation - to a coach seat... is about as significant of a downgrade you can possibly get.
If you haven't traveled yet, you are certainly entitled to reschedule or get a refund... and don't forget to ask for an inconvenience credit voucher as well that can be applied to your next trip.
As for the overall decline in service... part is due to Covid and employee shortages... which is being experienced by all transportation modes. But Amtrak's problems started before Covid.
So if you want to travel by train in this country you need to have a 'stiff upper lip' but know that you have rights as a passenger, and if you are flexible with scheduling and pricing, can put up with occasional snafu's, you can still get a worthy train experience.
Get yourself a nice room when you can, bring along some good snacks and drinks, and enjoy the ride as the world glides by!
