This topic is perhaps more important than at first might appear. The other day I was chatting with Sandi, the Amtrak agent at Glenwood Springs, about the upcoming e-book edition of my 1994 book "Zephyr," and I asked why passenger traffic at GSC had not increased between 1991-2, when I traveled for that book, and today. I'd thought it was because No. 25 had been eliminated from No. 5, and because Amtrak has no extra cars to handle increased traffic, but Sandi said the real reason was constant delays and service interruptions. That seems to help keep demand down.
Henry,

I wanted to ask...do you have any good resources for pre-Monthly Report ridership on Amtrak routes? I've got system ridership numbers for earlier years, and occasionally I see numbers for a route here or there, but nothing consistent or extensive.

Personally, I find re-routes pertinent. Three years ago when I took my father on a long trip involving 4 trains we learned the CZ was being re-routed north through Wyoming bypassing the Colorado Rockies. When I got home a week later I had a VM message advising me of this. A moot point for sure!

I'm taking the CZ from Reno, NV to Denver, CO in August to see the most scenic portion that I missed before. My elderly father is not able to travel any longer. I really think Amtrak could do a better job of handling these re-routes (when they know).
