Well our trip out to CA may be changing. We may take the CZ to EMY then stay a day or two in SF and then take the CS down to LA. We now plan on leaving the UCLA/Nebraska football game after the game, driving back to Las Vegas with my stepson and then flying home from LAS to OMA where we plan on parking at the train station so we don't have to pay for parking and we would depart #5 from OMA. What is the name of the hotel right by the Amtrak station in Emeryville? Also is there others that are near the station that has any kind of shuttle? And is there rental car agencies near the area?. We depart at 9am to LA so I don't want to be clear in the city of San Francisco. Any tips or info would be greatly appreciated.

We stayed at the Four Points about 1block from the station, it was a nice place

We did the same thing--CZ to Emeryville and then the Coast Starlight to LA in late Jan-early Feb--a few weeks ago.

We stayed at the Hyatt House 2 nights (formerly Woodfin Suites and then it was the Summerfield Suites)--its name was changed a couple of months ago. We got a great rate for the Hyatt House on Hotwire. If you book on Hotwire (or other sites like this, I believe) you don't get the big suite--you just get a King Room. But that's all we needed. They have a great breakfast buffet. The description of the hotel on Hotwire convinced me it was the Hyatt House--and yes, it was--when we got the hotel name after we paid. The Hyatt House is very near the Amtrak Station --there is an elevator you can take to get there and back that goes above the street.

I had thought it was going to be challenging to obtain transportation into the city--public transportation was not nearby, or so I thought. Actually, there is a bus steps from the front door of the hotel that will take you directly into the city. So we were happy about that. We never used the BART system; only the cable cars to get around. We picked up an all day pass for that (thanks to someone on AU who suggested we do that). You can get the all day pass on the first cable car you get on. After we were done in the city we took the public bus back from where it dropped us off--it stops at a station near the financial district. As we approached the hotel on our way back, we had to ask the bus driver where we should get off, and he told us.

It was a short walk back. There was no need to rent a car.

We were glad to be near the Amtrak station the morning we picked up the Coast Starlight to LA. It all worked out great. We got to the Emeryville Station a little too early--too many airport trips, I guess, where you have to be there 90 min ahead of time. But the station has a nice waiting area. The CS arrived right on time and we hopped on to head to LA. It all worked out great.

Another that you don't get if you book on a site like Hotwire or Priceline is the 500 AGR points for staying at Hyatt House! They SPECIFICALLY exclude bookings thru third party sites from earning AGR or hotel points or airline miles!

If you're planning to stay in the SF area a day or two, why not book your ticket into SF, via Thruway connection. Enjoy that very interesting city, then take a Caltrain express train to San Jose from downtown SF (the 8am express gets you there at 9) to catch the CZ. Or go down the evening before and grab a hotel in San Jose before catching the train. Both SF and SJ would be more fun than Emeryville.

But!!! You can book with Priceline through the AGR portal and earn 4 X dollar spent. I just earned over 800 points on a $52 bid. In my experience using Priceline through the AGR portal points have always posted quickly, even posting into my AGR account before I even arrived back home from a trip on one occassion.

A good call; the hour at SJC gives you time to check bags, have a peek at our lovely 1935 former-SP station, and chat up the Station Host. Or ride down (on a weekday) to San Jose, take the free downtown DASH shuttle direct from the station to the Hotel Ste. Claire, Marriott or Hilton, and enjoy a night in downtown San Jose. DASH will take you right back to the train station in the morning.

Please explain how you earned over 800 points on a $52 bid? 52 times 4 is 208!

What am I missing?
You are absolutely correct. 52 times 4 is 208 times 4 nights equals 832 points :D That is an upcoming trip and those points already posted too. That bid was accepted and I will be staying at the Red Lion Hotel downtown Portland Convention center  . I just got the 4* Pan Pacific Downtown Seattle $65 a night. A little far off from the Amtrak station, but it's rated #5 of Seattle hotels. We'll see how it works out though. Pricelines been good to me and my AGR account

Of course I'm correct!

The Red Lion in PDX is very nice, and is right at a stop on MAX (light rail). Although, the one I'm thinking about I thought was called Lloyd Center (but is at the Convention Center stop). And it is in the "Free Zone" for MAX!

And if you don't know, Lloyd Center is a large indoor shopping mall, right in back of the Red Lion!

Hyatt House is hard to beat for stopovers in Emeryville. If you decide on HH, ask for Room 501 or 701 and you will have the perfect railfan's suite. Here is the vantage point you will get from room 501. Right across from the hotel, there is an international food court, movie theater, Peet's Coffee (yay), and brand new Guitar Center which is always fun to peruse through. A five minute walk will bring you to Trader Joe's Market where you can pick up some tasty vittles for your trip. After a nice breakfast service put on by the hotel's Emery Grille, it's a short jaunt to the station.

Right again  It is the Loyd Center Red Lion! I thought Loyd Center was the name of the convention center. It's nice to know about the Max line free zone and that we will have a shopping center easily walkable

From Union Station, walk left 1/2 block to the FRONT of the Greyhound station and board a GREEN LINE MAX (not yellow line). which a few stops later is the convention center stop. Walk forward and cross the street to the Red Lion. The door is actually on the next street over, but you can also walk thru the parking garage.

The best part of this transfer is that the MAX fare is $-0- for this segment!

For more shopping mall "fun", you can take a Red, Blue or Green Line Max to Gateway, then transfer to the Green Line right to the very end at the Clackamas Towne Center - another huge mall!

(If you take a Green Line MAX, you do not need to transfer!) This trip will cost the regular MAX fare, as it is outside the "free zone"!

I am staying at the Hyatt House when I am in Emeryville, is there an elevator to the walking bridge on both sides? If not, is there access to taxis to get to HH? I walk with a cane, so the amount of stairs up is out fo the question for me.

Yes, there is an elevator on both sides.

PL still owes me points for an April stay in the downtown Courtyard Marriott in Houston; it was only 1 night @~$45 so I haven't been willing to suffer through the phone call for 180 AGR points.

Hyatt House across the Pedestrian Bridge. Four Points across the ped. bridge and a block North. Courtyard Marriott across the ped. bridge and 2-3 blocks north. Another hotel is by the Freeway which is quite a few blocks away.

Hyatt House is the easiest IMO to get to the train station but others are close as well. It is near the Emeryville Public Market which is like an International Food Court. Also near Bay Street which is like a mid to upscale block or two of stores and restaurants. Four Points and the CY Marriott are across the street from Bay Street.

The Free Emery-Go-Round shuttle stops by each of those properties and connect to the BART station to SF. AC Transit (the local public transit system) has bus transportation to San Francisco from in front of all three for a nominal price. Amtrak also has Amtrak California Thruway buses from the Amtrak to a few points in San Francisco that meet with Capitol Corridor, San Joaquin, the CZ and the CS trains. They are pretty frequent throughout the day and the majority are Unreserved Thruways.

Plenty of options no matter where you choose to stay!
