The wife and I plan to travel Memphis to New Orleans roundtrip late August / early September. We would like to do the aquarium and the jazz dinner cruise on the Natchez. Any recommendations on good hotels/eateries?

I like Hotel Provincial. It is reasonably priced, not far from the river and in a quiet part of the French Quarter. It is a bit of a walk, but a pleasant one along the river, to the aqaurium and the Natchez. The rooms on the ground level can sometimes be a bit musty, so request a room on the second floor or higher. Here is their link: http://www.hotelprovincial.com/

For good music in a less touristy and nicer atmosphere, head over to Frenchman Street in the Faubourg Marigny. My favorite club there is The Spotted Cat: http://www.spottedcatmusicclub.com/

The J.W. Marriott (NOT "The Marriott) on Canal Street is close to everything as can be a good buy during the off season. It's about three blocks from the aquarium and two blocks from Bourbon Street. There's one heck of a good steak house inside the hotel.

:hi: New Orleans has Loooooots of places to eat, most of the best ones are Very pricey or youve never heard of them! I like a place called Coops on Decatur Street, Amtak crews turned me on to it! Mostly locals hang out there (its a bar/resturant with Gambling in the Back! Im Shocked! Shocked! to find out that Gambling goes on in New Orleans! Best Jambalaya ever, seafood, great oysters/po-boy sandwiches etc. Ice Cold Beer and good drinks!! (New Orleans is Steamy!! in the summer!) Of course Cafe du Monde is a must!

As to Hotels, Id suggest Googling up one of the Travel Sights, there are great deals in New Orleans in the Summer, especially during the week when a Saints Game or Music Fest or other Special Event isnt going on!(expect to pay from about $60-$150 a night plus tax for the nicer places!) One of my favorites is the Plas D'ame  right behind the Cathedral in the middle of the French Quarter), 200 year old building with a Lovely Courtyard, nice folks and includes breakfast for under $100!!(Ask foir an upstairs room if you like it!!)Check it out!! Close to everything but quiet! Bon Voyage!

We just got back from Amtrak trip there. Stayed at the Hampton Inn for $80+tax and that included an excellent buffet breakfast. We joined HHonors to get Amtrak points for the stay. I normally use Marriott and Choice Hotel properties but son & daughter-in-law with us on trip use Hamptons so we all stayed in the same hotel. It is in a historic building across street from convention center so we walked through the (air-conditioned) convention center to Riverwalk (also A/C) to stay cool.

I always stay here...very quiet part of the Quarter and convenient to everything. FWIW, it was Paul McCartney's favorite hotel in New Orleans and there is a suite named after him. Highly recommended.

It's a wonderful place. Had a suite last time with an exit window to sit on the roof. Great service, great bar, great pool.

If you have the time, and are so inclined, consider the "Bloody Mary" cemetary tour, and/or haunted French Quarter walking tour. She embellishes pretty good, and she is a real hoot to listen to, and the cemetary tour is great. She has a lot of background on these places, we went to Professor Longhair's gravesite, it is in a real dumpy old graveyard in a really poor part of town, also got to see real eviction notice in one of the Catholic cemetaries! Imagine that, an eviction notice on a tombstone, and it was legit!

We took the streetcar (On Canal Street, IIRC) to the end of the line to meet up with her, and that was a fun ride too.

Parking?   Automobile parking? I hope it is for a rental! Don't tell me people drive from out of state to NOL! :help: Now, on the other hand, if it is for PV, there is a page on Amtrak's website about rates (In New Orleans it is $100 per day for overnight services, with a 20% surcharge on the total cost while at NOUPT) and a page listing available services in NOL. Or you could just ask The_Traveler about such matters! :giggle:

I'll second the lodging of choice of the JW Marriott on Canal street. It's a four star hotel as is the Marriott across the street. We have lodged at both. For a three star hotel the Hotel Provincial is good and the location in the residential part of the French Quarter is excellent. There are lots of nice hotels there like the Monteleone , Omni etc. Often buys can be found on Hot Wire.

As for restaurants; the Gumbo Shop on St Peters. St is very good and reasonably priced. Roumalade is also reasonable and good. Paul Proudhommes restaurant called K -Pauls Louisiana kitchen is supposed to be a world class place but after a $125 dinner for 2 there this past June it was very disappointing .

I had the best meal of my life in April at http://www.commanderspalace.com/

A three course meal that lasted almost 4 hours. Each batch of turtle soup takes 3 days to make, everything was excellent. Go for lunch during the week and top shelf martinis are only 25 cents (limit 4 per person). I will be dining here at least once a year for the rest of my life.

I just bid $89. on Priceline.com and won The W Hotel 333 Poydras St. 2 nights 10/31/11- 11/02/11. It is 14 blocks from Amtrak station, and looks like it is adjacent to the Aquarium of the Americas. The hotel has mixed reviews on Tripadvisor, but it has a good ranking #62 out of 143 hotels. I think the Aquarium changes hours after Labor Day so it may not be open while we are there :angry2: (mon. & tues.) but halloween in New Orleans should be interesting
