Hotels New Orleans

Anyone with experience using the hotels nearest the New Orleans Amtrak station? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The last time I was in New Orleans (about 6 years ago), I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn, to which I walked from the Amtrak Station. I seem to recall that the Hotel was fine.

A few years before that I was attending a conference at the Holiday Inn, which is also walking distance from the Amtrak Station. I had no choice where to stay since I was not paying, but I would have preferred the Hilton Garden Inn.

I believe that trolleys may get you close to the hotels from the Amtrak Station. Hopefully someone with better and more recent knowledge will chime in.

I stayed at the Hyatt Regency, near by. One thing I didn’t like about it was it required changing elevators at its elevated lobby level to reach the street from your room or vice versa. Or you could use an escalator or stairs between street and lobby. I find that very annoying if going in and out several times a day. I had the same bad experience at a Montreal hotel near the Old Port a few years ago. I won’t go back to either of them.

I prefer easy access…

As @railiner has pointed out, the Hyatt is probably the most convenient to the station, and there are actually two Hyatt properties there. One is the full service described and then there is a mid-level property in the Hyatt family. The two cautionary notes for either are not being particularly close to the touristy stuff - requiring transit (streetcar) or other transportation, and neither is affordable if there is an NFL game or other event at the nearby stadium.

I've stayed at the Holiday Inn New Orleans-Downtown Superdome at 330 Loyola Avenue. A little further away than the Hyatt Regency.

Drury Plaza is an 8 block walk.

You would walk pass 4-6 hotels to get there.

BUT very much worth the extra walk. for the breakfast alone.

(Should you stay there, across the street is the New Orleans Federal Reserve Bank. Check out the free museum and get some shredded money.)

Both times I’ve stayed in NOLA, I stayed at a beautiful independent hotel called La Pavillon that is an easy walk from the station, for a tripod like me. (I.e. I use a cane)

I have never found the area around NOUPT to be particularly interesting or attractive. Unless the price was right or a hotel there was especially convenient, I would prefer to stay in the French Quarter or close to it. I have never had any difficulty getting an Uber or a taxi from the French Quarter to the station or vice versa.

When catching an early train or plane, I always like to be at a location close by, so no stress in the morning catching it, or dealing with any transportation glitches.

There are lots of hotels within a few blocks of the station. I usually look for one that is within walking distance of the station and also convenient to the St. Charles streetcar since I enjoy riding it and I can use it to get elsewhere in the city.

The Drury (which was previously mentioned) is a great example - right on the St. Charles line and just a few blocks from the station - easy walk.

I have stayed several times at the Royal St. Charles Hotel on St. Charles Street just outside the French Quarter. I think it has been sold and is now under a new name. I always found the place to be reasonable and enjoyed staying there. However I recommended it to some friends, who were given an interior room without a window. After that, I made sure to request a room with a window specifically.

I never had trouble getting a taxi or an Uber from this hotel (or others in the French Quarter) to the station back when the Crescent left at 7 a.m. The worst trouble I had was rousing my adult son and getting him moving after he had spent a good part of the night on Bourbon Street.

Sounds like my son when we travel together. I don't think he's seen a hotel breakfast since adulthood.

We stay at the Walker Mansion on St Charles. Nice big room with two queen size beds and a nice bathroom. You have access to a big kitchen and dining area. We were there for 3 nights in September and it was 600.00.
