I had all but given up hope on those vacuum bags after my first attempt to use one resulted in the vacuum sucking not only the air out, but also the valve! Bag ended up useless.

Thanks for the tips about the travel ones. Haven't seen those in the stores around here, but then again I wasn't looking.

Try places like Big Lots or Ross. I see them in there all the time. If not there, I know the AAA around here has them but they're really expensive, as is everything at AAA. If you've got time to wait for the shipping, I see sets of 6 for about $10 including delivery on Ebay.

Granny,

Try this instead. Repack the bag for the overhead, based on what you will need when you board. If you are boarding at night leave out the change of clothes, toiletries, & put them in the other bag.

Put your change of clothes in a travel size space bag in the other bag, along with any other items you don't need immediately upon boarding. Make up one for each day on the train. Since you will have the other bag downstairs, you can always go down & get your change of clothes & toiletries in the morning.

I would keep medicines & that kind of stuff in the overhead bag. You should have more space then in the overhead bag.

I also put a few antibacterial wipes(non bleach type) in a quart size ziplock for our 'overnight bag'.

We took a trip that took three days each way on the train and was there for ten days. I packed way too much clothes. & we didn't use half of them. Next time I will take no more than 5 outfits each, excluding train clothes. Have a great trip!
