I'll be taking the Southwest Chief from LAX to CHI in October. I'm thinking of getting a french dip to go from Philippe, but have some concerns about whether the thing would be reduced to a damp mess if I were to wait to snack on it later that night. Maybe only having them dip the beef once? Or not at all? What's been the experience here?

By the way, I ate a french dip at Philippe last time on the recommendation of this forum and you folks are right: This is among the best french dips I've ever eaten.

Get the dip in a seperate container with a lid and dip as you eat the sandwich. If it's dipped and sets awhile you will have a soggy mess that you won't enjoy. Even at room temp it will still be great.

With that morsel within reach, I do not see how it can survive for more than an hour before succumbing to temptation

I always get french dip sandwiches with a bowl of dip on the side, even as eat-in. With that in a sealable container, it should be fine. Just be careful not to spill.

With styrofoam and plastic lids you are asking for a mess if you try this IMHO. Eat and enjoy at the restaurant and the enjoy dinner in the diner.

If you are traveling light with little luggage maybe you will be ok.

On my last trip on the CS, my connecting train (Surfliner 763) was running late. I ran to Philippe's, got two to go (dip on the side) and ran back. Granted, I only ate them about an hour later, but while the inside of the roll was a little moist, the outside was still dry. I think you will be fine.

great...food porn on AU??? Sheesh.

too bad i hadn't read about this when i was traveling thru LAUS...oh well, guess i will have to hop on a train across the country and get me a french dip...YUMMY

On my way to the Gathering I expect to pass thru LAX on Wed 10/5. SWC to CS. I hope to have time to get to Phillipes for a Lamb French Dip.

I'm kinda hoping to meet a bunch of you there. :hi:

I know I am taking the psot off-topic, but I would love having even mediocre french dips on the LD lunch menus; maybe starting with the CS Parlor Car???

Well, I've never been to Philippe's (as I've never been to Los Angeles), but here in Chicago we have something similar called an Italian beef sandwich. (There's also the Italian sausage sandwich, and the "combo" sandwich with Italian beef and sausage. )

A "dipped" Italian beef/sausage/combo is very often eaten not as a sandwich but with knife and fork.

Gawd, now I have to have a "combo" for lunch.

Don't forget the HOT MUSTARD.

And if you're at CUS, just trot right upstairs to Gold Coast Dogs for a good one :) Toss in a bag of Fries and you have a meal fit for a Warrior!
