Well, I booked two weeks ago and the forecasters called for sunny skies and warmth. Remind me to never trust fifteen day forecasts again!

I leave on my ATL-NOL-HOS tomorrow and it looks like it will rain the entire way down. I am kind of upset about this, because I think it'll make the scenery much less interesting and photography will probably be a challenge too. And traveling in the rain is always a bit well, messy. Does anyone have any tips on how to manage in the rain?

Thank you!

Take an umbrella.

Seriously - if you're on the train it won't be wet inside. Photography is sometimes easier as there isn't the big contrast of light and dark from shadows.

Enjoy the trip and let us know how it went.

Won't the windows be more of a problem?

If there are raindrops on them, it can be a problem, but that's what Photoshop is for!

I must have missed the "Remove Raindrops" button... ;)

Depends on if you don't mind the rain....I like it 'cause it cleans the air. I'm not a photo person, but won't that make the windows cleaner? I always tell my kids 'I'm not sugar, I won't melt'! Maybe it's just how you look at it. But yeah, take an umbrella (or a hat)! :p It could snow instead!

Seriously, most of the time meteorologists say they are making an educated guess (my apologies to them in advance) based on history & stuff. Not to say they aren't right, but they aren't 100 % of the time. Maybe it won't be that bad!

I learned never to trust 15 day forecasts the time I looked at one in anticipation of an Amtrak trip and on the day I was supposed to go the forecast called for 50 degrees (this was in June) and wind and rain and ice. Turned out to be 80 degrees and sunny.

To me getting to ride a train is fun any time!!!! I don't really care about the weather since I don't have to be out in it.

Beats riding a bike long distance in the rain. I saw some young adults doing that in the Arizona strip several years ago. It was pouring rain and the next town was about 50 miles.

I was on a train once in the rain and the views were a bit dreary. But it was dry inside and the conversation was just as good as if it had been sunny.

rain makes it interesting back in may 08 when i was on the taxes eagle it was raining so hard UP had us sit on the tracks till it lightened up for safety reasons. it was thundering also.

Five years ago, on a trip on the CZ, the train I was on hit a tremendous rainstorm just out of Mt. Pleasant, IA. It rained so hard sheets of water were just pouring over the windows. Probably the best washing those windows had had in a long time!

I was on the Southwest Chief during a heavy rainstorm and it was marvelous! You could hear the rain hitting the roof and the windows in the sleeper, but i was snug, warm and dry inside.

I remember being at CUS during a July downpour two years ago. It was kind of a cool site when an Amtrak train or Metra would pull in and stop and all of the water that was sitting on it while it was in motion would gush off of it. Kind of a cool sight.

I'd much rather be on a train in rain (or snow) than driving on the roads in that weather! :)
The traveler is so happy that he pretends he's Gene Kelly and starts singing:

Choo-choo choo choo choo

Choo-choo choo choo, choo-choo

Choo-choo choo choo, choo-choo

Choo-choo choo choo, I'm...

Traveling in the rain

Just a-rolling in the rain

What a glorious feelin'

I'm happy again

I'm laughing at clouds

So dark up above

The sun's in my heart

Cuz'of this train that I love

Let the stormy clouds chase

Any gloom from my space

Come on with the rain

I've a smile on my face

I walk through this train

With a happy refrain

Just singin',

Singin' in the...

(repeat the Choo-choo's)

:D

Aloha

If I know I can keep my camera dry I like pictures taken in the rain as there is a different look from the diffused light.

Good luck on your trip

Well, my trip is over and you guys were 100% right--the weather isn't what makes a train ride great fun. The train itself (and the awesome people on it) make it fun! It rained in Georgia, it was clear in Ala., and poured in southern Mississippi--and in a few spots in Louisiana. But once I was on board any unpleasant feelings I had just melted away.

And I definitely didn't need an umbrella! :p

Glad you had a good time anyway! See, a little  water doesn't matter, as long as you are focused on other things!! :p

I must admit that some of the best rail trips I have had have been in the rain. Maybe it's that "missery loves company" or something but I always think of taking the train in the rain as to being really comfortable inside with a good book. make sense though, trains make me really relaxed and content. Nothing beats a train trip in the snow though.

Funniest trip in the rain: Tampa - Orlando in Spring - we left Tampa it was beautiful, along the way a storm built up over the Orlando area and when we arrived in Orlando we couldn't disembark as there was so much hail they had to make everyone go back inside that had been waiting outside for the train! that was some +100 people!

Probably my nicest train memory was seeing a very bright, vivid, full double rainbow in South Carolina.

Wouldn't have seen that if it wasn't for the rain we'd had.

I can't recall the nearest train stop, but it is the one people use when going to Parris Island.
