The Texas Eagle and the CONO used to just have Coach/Bag cars but now both run with the New Viewliner Bags as was said. IINM they still have a Coach/Bag in the consists?

My Conductor and Agent friends tell me they really like the new Bag cars!

Yes, there is often a coach-baggage car in the consist. I have observed it in the past used to carry Boy Scouts luggage to Raton, and also when a year or so ago they ran a shortened consist during the winter minus baggage and dorm car.

There simply aren't enough straight coaches, so a coach-baggage can be substituted without losing too many seats.

My experience is that almost all the LD train west from Chicago carry both the regular baggage car and the coach/baggage car. Last time I rode the California Zephyr, they even unloaded some sleeper car baggage from an exterior door in the sleeper car. So there are several extra baggage doors in each train.

You must be talking about what used to be called ski lockers. They are compartments at one, or possibly both ends of the car. They extend the width of the car and have tall, narrow doors on each side. When community luggage space is tight, sometimes the SCA will put our folding bikes there.

The Texas Eagle still has one Coach/Bag car, though it is only used for passengers. Doubt a replacement full coach is available. Wonder if Beech Grove will re-convert these Coach/Bag cars back to full Coaches to add an additional 12 passengers.

Is it just me, or does the Southwest Chief carry one or more coach/baggage cars, as well as a purpose built baggae car?

Don't think I have ever ridden the Southwest Chief without a full baggage and a coach baggage. Of course, I almost exclusively ride it in the summer when boy scouts are also using it. Many times they have used the coach baggage for the scouts.

I remember riding the SF Grand Canyon to/from Raton in 1963 and 1965 originating in Chicago, arriving from Connellsville on the B&O. We kept our full packs in the overhead and our day bag by our feet. Our contingent was 40 boys and 5 adults so the SF gave us our own Coach car, but the B&O had us sit in the aisle on our packs since they over sold the train. Coming back we had our own cars the whole way. Never did any of our packs go into the baggage car. Things are much different now.

Several years ago the SCA out my skies in one of those lockers for a trip from Calif to Colo. Very convenient.

I think that Amtrak now insists that skis be checked in the baggage car and charge a fee for the service.
