Any one know how long a) each unit is, and b) what the length of a 16-car consist is?

According to Wikipedia, Kato's N-scale trains are produced at 1:160. Other manufacturers go down (or up, if you prefer) as far as 1:148.

If the real-life cars are 25,000 mm (intermediate cars) and 27,350 mm (end cars), then the Kato trains should include 156.25 mm long intermediate cars, and 170.9375 mm long end cars. For a 16-car train, then, the total length should be 170.9375 x 2 + 156.25 x 14, or 2529.375 mm.

Your actual train length may vary, however.

Yeah - I got the same calculations. Except, I used 1:150 because the Shinkansen is standard gauge whereas most of the rest of Kato is modeled at 1:160 because most of the country is meter gauge.

I came up with roughly around 9 feet!

I guess I'm not going Japanese 100% prototypical anytime soon!
