Was the cold that extreme? I don't know what it was but wasn't under the impression it was super cold for upstate NY.
Yeah it was that cold yesterday. Single digits or below zero northern points. My house is near Utica and it was (-2) Fahrenheit.

Not giving Amtrak any excuses here, but yes it was very cold today. Snow storm tonight in the north country too.

I see that both the 49 and the 449 come thru Cleveland at 403am headed to Chicago. What is each train point of origin? Seeing as some trains are late sometimes, which train would be the best to buy a ticket for if one must get to Chicago on time? I dont want to miss my connection with the TE at 152pm. I figure the people on this platform know more about these trains than I do.

They are the same train. 49 is the cars originating in NYP; 449 is the cars originating in BOS. The two sections are coupled together in Albany/Rensselaer.

Buy whichever has the lower fare. The only difference is if you're in a sleeper, you'll have a longer walk to the diner on 449.

Oh. So, it's not two trains coming thru. Just the one combined.

Thank you.

49 is the New York section
449 is the Boston section.
The two sections are combined into a single physical train between Albany/Rensselaer and Chicago.
They are listed as two separate trains for the entire run within Amtrak's reservations system because it cannot handle inventory on a single train with multiple endpoints.
