I wouldn't worry too much about something like a thruway bus connection between Emeryville and San Francisco now that there aren't any intermediate stops in San Francisco. All passengers get out at the same stop and ostensibly can keep an eye on the baggage hold. But I've taken several longer bus segments where there were multiple stops - often overnight where I might be sleeping. I might look out the window if I was on that side. A few times I just brought whatever I had on board even though it took up a lot of my legroom.
