Looking for info on the dependability of the time schedule. Booking flights to connect in LAX, to and from LAX and Paso Robles. Prefer to not need a hotel in LAX. And, seating is unassigned on the train…is that an issue?

The Surfliners hold pretty well to their schedule, and any connecting buses will wait for the train if it's late.

Your choices for same-day connections to PRB are limited to the 7:13pm departure from LAX Union Station to SBA. That would put you in PRB at 1am. On the return from PRB you're looking at a 3:15am bus or a 9:40am bus with a red-eye flight back east.

Plan on 90 minutes to two hours to transfer between LAX (airport) and LAX Union Station on the Flyaway bus. Alternatively, if you can fly into Burbank (BUR) the Surfliner will stop at a station across the street from the airport.

Unassigned seating isn't generally a problem unless there's a major event happening somewhere along the route.

Thank you! Looking like more time than we thought. We need to think about the train vs driving.
Yeah, PRB is not in an easy location to get to. You can't fly directly there either.

There might be an option to catch local transit from SLO, but that won't wait for any trains and you then have to worry about launches from Vandenburg AFB stopping trains during launch periods (either SpaceX, NASA, or the military). You can, however, fly into SLO (airport code: SBP) if you book with Alaska, United, or American.

Ok…our current plan is to fly direct to LAX and spend the night. We will take the direct train at 8:51-4:13. And, returning in the same manner to spend the night again and fly out early the next day. Less stress and better travel this way.

I would agree that this is a much better plan. It looks like the CS leaves LAUS at 9:51 AM, not 8:51?
Enjoy the trip, it's a beautiful ride along the coast and quite interesting when you head off inland.
