I don't believe that a full service diner operates Albany-Boston... is there a lounge-diner operated on this section or do sleeping car pax have to pay for adequate lounge/cafe food on their own? My dad and I will be making this trip in a roomette April 8th-9th, and I was wondering what the service on this section would be like (and secondary, if any other AU'ers will be on the train

There is not a full service diner, but sleeper passengers are provided complimentary meals in the lounge car. Westbound, there were two choice, one was I believe some kind of a sandwich platter and I selected the salad, which was quite good.

Also,if you do not care for either of the choices, you may choose anything from the cafe menu. Beverages and dessert is included, too!

Mike: What happens when there is a bustitutuion between ALB and BOS, do they have box dinners or stop @ a Mickey Ds or are you just SOL?? :help: Jim

You are out of luck when there is a bustitution. This just happened to me in October. I was a sleeper passenger (bedroom) from BOS to CHI. There was a bustititution from BOS to ALB. We did not get the lunch we woud have gotten if we were in the sleeper from BOS to ALB. We were given a small box containing a package of Oreo's and a package of crackers and a package of M&Ms and one tiny water bottle. This was given to all (coach or sleeper). There was no lunch provided to anyone including sleeper passengers. I know you are talking about ALB to BOS versus BOS to ALB but I can only assume its the same either way.

Jim,

Smile145 summed up it well. A snack pack was handed out to all passengers. Amtrak does refund your sleeper fare, so, IMHO, you really are not owed a meal. A side note, when I had a bad-ordered BOS sleeper, lunch was provided from the cafe menu. Once in ALB, I had a room in one of the New York sleepers, and the remaining meals in the lovely Heritage diner.

wow...last winter when i was bustituted from BOS to ALB we had a really nice boxed lunch....in fact i think everyone got it....nice sandwich (several varieties were offered..on a nice array of breads..) some sort of chip-like things (again. all kinds, randomly distributed in the boxes..) plus cookies and a piece of fruit i think...and sodas/water.

this was all preloaded onto the bus....the conductor even rode with us and told us the food was there....we also had a few hours to wait in ALB so several pax grabbed an additional snack there...

i would have guessed they'd do the same both ways.....we then got onto our sleeper there...(i think the BOS-ALB part was bustituted due to floods but i forget...)

A boxed lunch does sound nice :) My bustituted trip was a 'last minute' change. Trackwork had been scheduled before my trip, but was supposed to end before I headed back home. The work took longer than anticipated, so on the bus we went. I believe amtrak called me to advise of the change shortly before I left CHI, so there may not have been time to arrange for meals.
