Can anyone tell me how big the overhead luggage racks are on the Amtrak California Cars? I am specifically looking at the San Joaquin.

There normally ones that are like overhead bins that close and smaller (I cant fit my backpack in them that fit in normal racks) but most trains have one Superliner car with normal racks and there a couple of luggage tower racks on both levels for larger items.

The San Joaquin overhead bins are about airline size, but there are larger racks on the lower level and at the top of the stairs. I've always been able to find room for my too-big-to-fly rolling sarcophagus. For transportation, I really like the San Joaquin- comfortable, and even with the painless bus leg faster to LA/Santa Barbara, etc.

From lots of experience... the overhead luggage bins are MUCH smaller than the overhead luggage bins on most airliners. (They are more like the size of the bins on a Regional Jet.)

You can fit a normal sized "daypack" backpack or a duffle bag up there. For a "rollaboard" suitcase or an external frame backpack you'll need to put it into the luggage tower at the center of the upper-level or on the lower-level by the door.

I'm going to be coming in on the SWC and bus to the San Joaquin so I will be boarding the San Joaquin at Bakersfield with my carry-on size roller bag. Sounds like I should look for a car with one door. If no Superliner, I can use the upstairs bin. Thanks everyone. :)

The door to any Superliner cars in the consist won't open. You'll need to enter at one of the neighboring cars and walk across on the inside. At that point, you might as well just stick your bag in the upstairs luggage rack of whatever car your enter.
