Was wondering how the Megabus works out. It leaves from CUS and goes to many cities. The price has gone up in the past year, but it now serves more places than it did a year ago.
Betty - see this THREAD.
I have seen discussion on some other boards that it is working quite well. They even have some new double level buses. I communicated with a fellow who just took one from CUS to MSP. He said the ride was good (not as good as a train) and they made several rest stops along the way.

The good side to the service is almost direct travel between major cities. The downside is, no local service as trains have.

They are in California, now, too.

The one experience I've had wasn't good. My girlfriend took the MegaBus from Chicago to Columbus last July. The price was cheaper than flying, but not a $10 seat either.

The bus broke down an hour north of Indianapolis. They were stuck on the side of the road for 4 hours. Given that they were less than 4 hours from Chicago, I'm guessing the replacement bus came from elsewhere. They eventually got into Columbus around midnight, for what should have been a 6PM arrival.

To MegaBus' credit, they did refund her full fare.

Probably not the norm. Look how many times Amtrak is late.

Betty & Tom;

I saw at least three of these double deck monsters loading up at CUS. I don't know how they do it with fares starting at $1 plus a paltry 50 cents handling fee (it's written right on the side of the bus.) The buses looked clean, new and state of the art as far as buses go...after many years of Amtraking I have still to catch a bustitution but if I did I think I wouldn't mind riding one of these blue monsters from what I saw of the outside.

i've taken megabus between KCY and STL and it's great. unfortunately, it's far more competitive (4 hrs) than our state-sponsored amtrak service (6 hours, with frequent delays). inter-city bus travel was drying up before they debuted, so it's good to have another option.

Here's one leaving Chicago.

some pros, some cons, and some positive/negative comments about Amtrak.

I could have sworn I recently read something somewhere about the Company losing money last year, but cannot find the article. Anyone else see it, or is my over 50 brain making it up?

I see megabus buses sitting in front of the Caltrain station in San Francisco. Essentially they are a parasite outfit. No stations, not facilities, but stop at places so their passengers will use facilities built and paid for by somebody else.

There is a sign inside the chicago station telling people the bus is in no way associated with the station.

When I as there last, long lines outside, people everywhere to board the bus.

In Washington DC train station I was stopped by two Russian tourist looking for a bus to new york. I told them it would be better to take the train, but they wanted nothing to do with it. The bus station is 2 streets over, so off they went.

I priced MegaBus about a month ago from NYC-WAS and for 4 of us to leave at 6:30am from NYP (where our train is departing from) it was going to be $8.50 TOTAL. Our Amtrak fare is $248. If I was travelling just with my girlfriend or by myself, I think I would have tried it. But I want to take a "regional" and see what its like to go 110mph!

You might even get to experience 125 MPH if you're not taking the Regional Formerly Known as the Twilight Shoreliner (AKA #66/#67).

(That overnight train has a baggage car, and it is believed that the baggage car probably has 110 MPH trucks. Everything else used on Regional trains is believed to be good for 125 MPH.)

Sadly he's on the Carolinian, which also carries a baggage car limiting it's top speed.
