Heavy on the chicken.

You can have chicken, in one form or another, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Or. Sliced turkey w/portobello mushroom sauce for lunch & dinner.

I'll be on the CZ for in 2 weeks and might try the new menu items.

Chicken and turkey are cheap and of course Tilapia and other white fish is also cheaper than Salmon or Crab.

Hopefully these will be tasty and healthy, not the typical frozen, processed garbage one gets most places including Amtrak Diners!

Looking forward to reports from our field correspondents that are lucky enough to be riding on the LD Trains.

Still uselessly free of ingredient lists. I can eat barely any of this because of the absence of ingredients lists. Eggs. Garden Salad. Steak without sauce.

The Food Facts site has new menus posted for the trains with full dining car service.

A quick glance showed the shrimp/crab cakes are replaced with a spice rubbed cod loin, and the specials are now a chicken dish with a note

to market towards First Class passengers, and a turkey entree to market towards coach.

See for yourself.

Click on Silver Star and the Amtrak Steak is listed so it's obviously out of date:

The Coast Starlight lists it as the "Signature Black Angus Flat Iron Steak". Looks like the food facts have been updated but the main menus themselves have not (still dated 0416). I like that the catch of the day is a cod filet rather than a crab cake (and whatever is in a crab cake). My wife noticed the absence of the Railroad French Toast!

Just a cautionary warning. The food facts menu is different from the sample menus posted on https://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?=Page&pagename=am%2FLayout&cid=1241305537990 September is not when menus have changed in the past. More likely in the Spring season.
No, the emus change change twice, Fall and Spring, what you are seeing is the upcoming October menu changes.

The Food Facts site is often updated before the regular menu listings on Amtrak.com.

Both sites are often out of sync with each other.

Cod's got loins?

News to me.

Sad to see the french toast has once again been replaced by pancakes on the TE.

"Baked Amazon Cod Fish"

...

Cod don't live in the Amazon. I'm all for marketing and grok that "Baked Amazon Cod-Like Fish" doesn't sound as good, but this kind of thing bugs me. Amazon cod isn't a thing. I don't want to eat it. Paiche? Sure.

Maybe Amtrak buys it from Amazon; they sell everything else   :p

If they are referring to Arapaima, then it isn't even a sustainable fish and is in danger of extinction according to the WWF, I'm whacking my head wondering what else this "Amazon Cod" could be but I really at a lost.

IF (and its a big if) it is Arapaima then it is extremely irresponsible of them.

The new national menus look very good--there are actually a few things I might like, and there is more of a selection than before.

However, I'm a bit confused. The bottom box says information from Amtrak food suppliers is as of 5/8/13--that's a long time to go without an update.

The cage-free eggs is a good start (this is not perfect--that would be free-range organic--but it's something). Also a spinach omelet is a nice update.

However, the excellent selections and 2013 date at the bottom lead me to wonder if Amtrak posted an old version by mistake?

Also (and completely off the actual topic, but I am really curious), who eats chicken biscuits for breakfast? Is it a regional thing in a region I haven't yet visited? Never heard of it before.

Chicken on a biscuit has made its way onto the breakfast menu of a number of national chains, so someone must eat them (not me, however) Cage free-organic would be great, but major commissaries would probably not go that route because of volume and price considerations. They are expensive.

As long as they serve padagonion tooth fish as "Chilean sea bass" I can live with Amazon Cod.

Chilean sea bass is a good un-fishy fish if you like that sort of thing... But Google its image. Garsh, Mickey!

Me, my big favorites are catfish, steelhead, and rainbow trout. Which to quote Eve Marie Saint, are good but trouty.

Amtrak is always looking to save money so why not just replace all those menus except for PPC with the "Amtrak Generic Menu For All Long Distance Trains Until You Get Sick Of The Same Food For The Next Six Months" menu cover? They could put small pics of all the original menu covers on the cover (if there is room after the title). Would allow them to tell Mica they saved a few dollars "wasted" on sleeper passengers. :giggle:

Also, they have a dining car menu listed for the Silver Star, but it does not match the one for the Silver Meteor (and of course there is no dining car on the Star now to have a menu). So there seems to be something fishy about what they posted on the Amtrak website (in addition to the well-read cod). :p
