Hi. My boyfriend and I are going to St. Paul on Amtrak, and then getting a car from Enterprise. The problem is this: I've just figured out that the Amtrak station (Midway Station) is six miles from the airport, where Enterprise is.. and apparently there are no shuttles! Has anyone done this before? How did you get to the airport? We're going to be getting to the Amtrak station at 10:30PM, and we have to get to Enterprise before they close at midnight. So walking is out because we would most likely take too long.

My last couple of trips on Amtrak, have involved leaving Midway and then flying back at the end of my trip. Since my car was still at the station, I've taken a taxi cab both times which has worked out okay for me. The cost is about $25-30 for the cab. Another option to consider is that Hertz does have a booth at Midway and although it may not be staffed, you may be able to arrange transportation to pick up your car with minimal cost to you. If anything, I would give Hertz a call and find out how they would handle it.

Thanks so much for the response! So, do the taxis just wait there at the Midway Station all the time? Do you think they'll be there at 10:30PM? This is our first train trip, so we're a little anxious about everything. Don't want to be stranded in St. Paul all night!

Cabs the world over know when things are happening that mean fares: the theater or a concert letting out, or a train coming in. Even if the EB is late, the cabs know when it is getting in and will be there to meet the train.

Would it be better for us to reserve a shuttle.. I found some shuttle company called Super Shuttle or something like that. Or would a taxi be better?

Super Shuttle would be cheaper, but you might pay a per person charge. Cab is the best way to go. If there are no cabs, then you can always call one. It is possible to get to the airport by public transportation but that late, it might take awhile. I've done it many times, though during the day. Also, Enterprise probably has other locations. They always advertise that they will come pick you up. So that may be an option as well. Not sure if the airport location will pick you up though.

When trains are arriving, they will be in the area. Just prior to a train arriving, I've seen between 3-5 in the taxi stand area. Outside of the train arrival, they are not around. It is a staffed station, so if you needed to make a call, you should have a little time to do that. In fact, one of the main cab companies is about 6 blocks from Midway, so if you did need to make a call, I don't think you would have to wait very long.

An no, you would not want to have to spend the night in the area. It's not particularly dangerous, but very industrial. However, if worst came to worst, there is a Days Inn not too far away that does provide a free shuttle as well.

Enterprise almost certainly has other locations closer that would pick you up, but none will be open at 10:30pm. Almost all local branches close at 6pm.

Airport Enterprises do not offer pick-up service, as they cater primarily to travelers arriving at the airport who (obviously) don't need to be picked up from anywhere.

I used SuperShuttle once in NYC to La Guardia (against my will--I would much rather have taken public transit), and it worked fine. However, for such a short distance and for two people, I don't think it will save you much (if any) over a cab. (Generally, they charge a fairly low base fare but $10 per extra person traveling with you.)
