Need some advices on my itinerary

Hi all,

Please excuse me if I post this in a wrong section. And please let me know if I do.

I am planning to cross the country by Amtrak. Here is my first version of Itinerary

Time span: Nov 17 ~ Nov 27 (11days)

Transportation:

East to west: Amtrak 15 day pass
West to East(back) : flight

Itinerary:

NYC Nov 17 - 11AM ~ Chicago 18 - 8 AM (2 Segments)
stay overnight in Chicago: 18, 19 -- sightseeing during 18, 19

Chicago 20 - 2pm ~ Salt Lake 21 11:05 pm (1 Segment)
stay overnight in Salt Lake 21, 22, 23 -- sightseeing during 22, 23

[*]Salt lake 23 - 11:30 pm ~ Sacramento CA 24 2:13pm (1 segments)

Because I've been to San Frans, I am not gona spend time there.
crunch somewhere in Sacramento？

Is the Lake Shore Limited sold out for November 17? That would be one segment from NYP to CHI. That is a better alternative than a NE Regional to Washington and the Capitol Limited from Washington to Chicago. It is certainly better than takeing the always late Cardinal through West Virginia which has loads of snow.

As for the California Zephyr, I like taking my break in Glenwood Springs which is a little better than getting off in the middle of the night in Salt Lake City.

I love staying in Sacramento. The California Railroad Museum, Old Town Sacramento and the Capitol grounds/building are all within walking distance of the train station. Take the Coast Starlight from Sacramento to Los Angeles. With an extra day you could stop in Santa Barbara for a night and take a Pacific Surfliner into LAX the next day.

The 15 day USA Railpass is good for 8 segments within 15 days.

Thank you very much for your reply. It's odd that I didn't find the one-stop option from NYC to Chicago yesterday. But I can see the option now. Awesome, hopefully when I get the tickets this afternoon, it still is available.

As for salt lake city, it's one of cities that I would like to visit. That's why I made such decision.

Your suggestions on the part from Sacramento to Los Angeles. I might consider staying at Sacramento and visit those places as you suggested.
