Adding onto "new cars" discussion initiated by busboy:

Does anyone know where the new Amtrak cars are built? Is there a link to what they will look like?

Well the new Viewliners are being built in New York State. And the cars will look like the current Viewliner sleepers, although the cars will be a mix of sleepers, diners, baggage dorm cars, and baggage cars.

The Viewliner II set of cars is being built by CAF in Elmira, New York. As Alan said, they'll look like the current Viewliner Is. They won't all be sleepers, though.

My instinctive response when I read this first was- CHINA?

That's where the whole world seems to be manufactured these days.

Any idea when the baggage cars start coming out? I just saw one on the CS that was awful. Doors didn't work, looked like it had been in storage for 20 years, the brakes squealed louder that any cars I have ever heard before.

So far I have not heard anything definitive about eh order in which they will come out. Will try to dig around and see what I can get.

The only definitive news on the order in which the new Viewliners will be produced is that the first car off the line will be a diner. We don't know what the second car will be!

Due to various delays we have no clear idea when they're going to start coming off the line either.

The last estimate I've found in publicly available information is from Amtrak's Fleet Strategy plan; at that time they expected only 25 of the new Viewliners to be in service as of October 2013, with the rest being delivered before October 2014.

It is not clear what the mix of cars in the first 25 is going to be, although since it was indicated that all but 12 Heritage diners would be taken out of service, we can expect it to be mostly diners, if not all diners.

An interesting detail from the Fleet Strategy Plan is that Amtrak has an enormous number of baggage cars -- something over 400 -- which are still on its books but not in use (presumably in even worse shape than the ones in use). This fits with the fact that they seem to be prioritizing diner replacement (there are just no spare diners anywhere) over baggage car replacement.

What order they will build the sleepers, baggage/dorm cars, and pure baggage cars in, nobody outside Amtrak seems to know; perhaps they haven't even decided yet.

At this point in the build program, the preferred delivery order and unit number deliveries should be spelled out - in detail - in the purchase contract or addendum's to the contracts. CAF has a lot of parts and modules to order for the 130 cars, those orders are not left to the last minute.

As you noted, the Amtrak rolling stock tables in their financial plans show at least 8 diner cars were scheduled for service by the end of FY13. My guess is that the most, if not all, of the first units to be delivered would be the diner and baggage-dorm cars. The baggage-dorm cars will help in 2 ways: free up baggage cars from the single level LD trains and roomettes for revenue.

PerRock - thanks for the link & photos of the plant production line. I also found more info. on CAF in Elmira (USA) which constructs the cars. http://www.caf.es/in...talaciones4.php
I try and keep tabs on all the various Amtrak-Related equipment coming out. I found pictures of the Viewliners & Talgos. However I haven't been able to find much on the new ACS-64s. I also heard a rumor that the new Corridor Cars may be built by bombardier (more I saw a leaked drawing which looked a lot like the proposed design).

My suspicion is that the 40 Acela Cars, when actually ordered, will also be build by Bombardier, since the tilt technology used would be hard to duplicate in short order by anyone else in a way that would flawlessly interoperate with the existing trains. That is technology that came from the original LRC that Amtrak previously tried and did not acquire.

Plus, per the terms of the original Acela contract, the Bombardier/Alstom consortium retained ownership of the car design drawings and associated intellectual property. The 40 additional cars will be a negotiated, sole-source purchase from Bombardier.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new diners in service.

I had the opportunity to have supper in the one prototype Viewliner Diner on the Cardinal back in the early 1990's and remember it as a particularly pleasant car to ride in. Also got to see this newly renovated car on display at the North Carolina Transportation Museum on the 4th of July.

I am dying to see, ride, feel, the Viewliner 2's, and to see the "Wow!" faces that light up when new deliveries unexpectantly roll into a station.

As we observed last week and this on the LSL, those Wow looks are already happening when the prototype Viewliner Diner appears on the LSL. It is truly wonderful IMHO.

Nice to see that people like them. Even first time riders probably feel that they are somehow different from the old Heritage cars.

The Dining Area works, but the Cooking Area does not. Good pic anyway.
You can scroll to the next pic which is the kitchen & if you scroll backwards you'll see exterior shots of the diner.
