The "new" tracks and platform that have been under construction at Los Angeles Union Station are complete and open, according to this press release:

CALTRANS UPGRADES LA UNION STATION TRACKS, PLATFORM

"'Amtrak appreciates the efforts of this project's partners, Caltrans and the Southern California Regional Rail Authority, along with the various private sector contractors and vendors,' said Mike Chandler, Amtrak General Superintendent Southwest Division. 'The new tracks and platform are welcome improvements as they will enhance train operations at the station and benefit ever-growing numbers of passengers seeking to travel by rail.'"

"'The reconstruction of Platform 7 and the three additional tracks will allow for greater flexibility for Metrolink service at Union Station,' said Metrolink Chief Strategic Officer Gray Crary."

"The new track construction, managed by Metrolink, began in May 2011 and was completed in September 2012."

Here's how the reconstructed tracks and platform appeared on 9-27-12, when Team Whooz was at LAUS to board the Southwest Chief on the way to AU Gathering VI:

It would be cool if somebody took a pic of Amtrak trains parked on that platform.
I believe they're mainly being used by Metrolink trains, based on what I've seen so far in following the Metrolink Twitter account (e.g., "VC line train 119 will depart from Track 13 today").

Amtrak generally uses Tracks 11 and 12, and has been for quite a long time. Is there any reason to change?

For me, the sad part is I left LAX Wed., 10/10 at 11:00PM on the 422 sleeper and didn't even notice the recently recompleted tracks after we sat at LA/US for an hour waiting for a late Surfliner from Santa Barbara. In my defense though, I did ride the new Expo Line in fron Culver City, which was a great ride, even if it took me about forever to get to LA/US from Santa Monica via Culver City using Big Blue Bus #5

Next time try BBB 10, the freeway express between DT Santa Monica and LAUS. $2.

Oh I know about #10, but I wanted to ride the Expo Line. ;)
