Early Sept. I'll try a different route out east. CS to SL to Crescent. I'll only have the one night in NOL. Suggestions on a hotel walking distance from the NOL station, please?

This should be fun unless I don't make the LAX connection. Tucson all the way to CVS will be new for me.

I have walked to the Drury Inn on Poydras. Nice place, reasonable rates. Not too far from the station

I have also walked to the St Peter House, on St Peter. It's just a couple blocks off Bourbon St; a longer walk from NOUPT. Not a high end establishment, but it's decent, and generally quite inexpensive. You usually have to call to make a reservation, the website is uncooperative :(

Worst case, a cab was $10 (last year, could be more now)for the local destinations.

I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn. Only a short cab ride from the station

and in an area of town with many stores and people.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn on Carondolet St near Canal. A very nice place, close to Bourbon St but quiet. Great food court in the hotel mall. Fantastic free breakfast in a large dining area. You could walk it on a nice day. Cab fare was $8.

There are a lot of hotels within "walking distance" depending upon how far one can walk and what luggage you have. I'd suggest you check TripAdvisor as you can see not only a map showing the location but the reviews of the various places. However, since the SL comes in late, you might consider as others have suggested, a short cab ride to a local hotel. Have fun on your trip. Too bad you won't have a few days in NOL to enjoy it.

I've stayed at the Quality Inn & Suites - Maison St. Charles. It is a nice, but inexpensive motel towards the Garden District. It's between 1/2 and 3/4 mile from the station on St. Charles, across from Emeril's Delmonico. It is near several other restaurants, bars, and shops as well, and not far from the WWII Museum. It's about a mile from the edge of the French Quarter, but the streetcar goes right past the front door, with a stop right there.

Again, if it is too far to walk, the cab ride would be pretty inexpensive.

The area of the train station can be sketchey as locals even told me. You are not that far from the French Quarter and is only about a $10 cab ride. If you do that, DO NOT STAY AT LAFEITE GUEST HOUSE.

I second the St Peter House... that is where J-1 3235 and I have stayed twice when visiting New Orleans on train trips together. I like it because it gives you that "New Orleans" feel... early 1800's hotel... right on the quarter... complete with the balcony over the street you see in postcards. I am sure some of the chain places are good too if you don't care to feel like FQ New Orleans. But I'll ALWAYS stay at St Peter House whenever I'm in NOL.

As J-1 3235 said, it is walk-able, but it is a little bit of a haul if you pack heavy. Both times I have walked from the station there with no problems though... then again... I try and walk 2 miles every day too. :)

Thanks so much folks. It'll take me a while to digest all this, but that's exactly why I'm asking now.

So glad to find this thread....I was also looking at a possible NOL trip and wondered what would be near the train station... love this resource!

I really like the Lafayette, it is an old school hotel, and the bathroom I had was a bit tired but clean. The room was huge, the furniture, old school, the neighborhood was charming and the trolley was fairly loud... It is 7 blocks (?) from Amtrak and an easy walk, though it would be better to walk in the daytime. The Lafayette is right next to the Federal Reserve and an easy walk to Bourbon Street. Get third floor or higher, but I like to be on the trolley side even though it is a bit noisier since the view is nice.

Check out tripadvisor.com and search for the Lafayette.

One of my favorite cities to ride the Train to! (Even if you "have to" spend the night due to no connections between Trains till the next day! ^_^ )

All the hotels mentioned are good and in the summer you can make some really good deals due to the heat and humidity! Use Kayak.com to Google up many travel sights for deals in NOL, I personally like a small, old place behind the Cathedral called PlasD'Armes, check it out!

And when it comes to food, no need to go to the famous, high priced places to eat and drink, tons of Mom and Pop places with Great Food and Drink where the locals go! I like a place called Coops (recommended by an Amtrak OBS) on Decatur Street! Fantastic Drinks, Wonderful Rabbit Jambalaya and Low Prices! (but I was Shocked! Shocked! to know that Gambling was going on and Working Girls were hanging out!   )

Also remember to get a Day Pass to ride the Street Cars, and the Ferry to Algiers is Free! Just walking around the Quarter is also Free Entertainment, and if you want to leave some Money there visit Harrahs Giant Casino, it was the First Place re-opened after Katrina! (No wonder Louisianas Politicians are second to Illinois for the number that are in Jail!)

I looked up the Coop's Place website (coopsplace.net) and I am definitely going to have to pay them a visit on my next trip to NOLA. The food sounds fantastic. I think our church group will love it!! (And no, I'm not joking!)

Just got off the phone with St Peter House & she gave me their web site - frenchquartersguesthouses.com- Price $134 mid July & $114 mid October.

Hotel Provincial:LINK HERE in the QTR. Not too fancy, but it has become where I stay in NOL because it feels like old NOL with mostly older buildings in a great but quiet but conveinent location. It is relatively close (I walk it, even at 2 AM) to Frenchman St, where the best cluster of music clubs in NOL is, and the clubs are all in about a three block area.

They offer a free 'continental' breakfast, but I go just around the corner (N on Ursulines) to a really good little bakery called Croissant D'or for breakfast.

Would there be plenty of taxis at the station at 7:30 at night? Thats if the Crescent is on time. I'm a single lady and older and not going to walk in the dark to a hotel alone.

The taxi drivers know when the trains are scheduled to arrive. There was a line of at least seven waiting when I arrived Wednesday last week. Take note: For downtown/French Quarter destinations from the train station, taxi fare is a flat $10 minimum or meter fare, whichever is higher.

A note of caution: NOL Cabbiess are Infamous for charging more than the standard $10 Fare to the Downtown Hotels! Weve had members that were charge $12-$15 for trips as short as a few blocks so be sure and let the Driver (there is a "Starter" that calls the cabs up to the front erntrance and opens the door for you, the driver will load your luggage)know that the correct fare is $10 to the Business District/Garden District and French Quarter Hotels! You may even meet someone on the train that is going to your Hotel or a Close by one and yall could share a cab!!

We just spent 2 nights in New Orleans coming in on the CONO and leaving on the Sunset. We stayed at the Quality Inn on O'Keefe. It was a nice place with very friendly staff. It is about midway between the train station and French Quarter. Cab rides are $10 minimum so that is what it cost between station and motel if you don't want to walk.

If haven't book your hotel and you willing to wait a little longer ... Try Hoteltonight.com

It's a app I swear by it and when u sign up you get 25 dollars in credits .,only thing is you have to wait to noon that day for same day arrival . They only post the best hotels!
