I am considering buying an acela ticket from BOS to PHL on Sunday, Nov. 3, leaving BOS at 4:10pm IF there is a good chance of being able to get an upgrade from business to first. I have an upgrade coupon which can only be used 12-hours in advance if space is available.

I have never taken acela before. For those with familiarity with this schedule, is there a good chance that an upgrade will work out or is it unlikely? What are your thoughts?

Thanks.

I suspect there will be at least some FC seats left. If you want a comparable sample, check the same schedule for tomorrow afternoon sometime tomorrow morning.

The Sunday Acelas are quite popular. I would suggest calling right at the 12 hour mark. Of course, you may check availabilty online; start with 8 passengers, and if need be, work your way down to see what's left.

I just checked this Sunday, and at least 8 FC seats are available on every Acela, but this is a three day weekend, so that has most likely skewed the results.

Best of luck!

Mike

I did a upgrade last Sunday and took the same train (2259) and there was only 8 people in FC. Usually Sundays are a good time to upgrade since the number of people traveling for Business purposes is quite low.

I often take the 2252 on Sundays and it is almost always sold out in FC. In fact I find Sundays to be a very busy travel day heading north/east from NYP.

My guess is that traffic may be somewhat directional...heavier coming out of NYP than going to NYP.

I was recently on 166. The entire train except BC was sold out to NYP. Where about 90% of the train emptied out. Most of which were drunken football fans which made for an interesting ride to say the least.

As I said I have yet to find a weekend Acela on which I fail to upgrade using Select+ upgrades. Those are 48 hour upgrades. There are many weekday Acelas on which such upgrades are not usable because FC is sold out 48 hours before departure.

Just because an FC has all seats full does not mean that some of those seats are not occupied by Select+ upgrades. I have been on Acela FC using upgrade which were completely full on the day of operation, but were available 48 hours earlier.

Jis, I agree that he should be fine for his upgrade if he calls at 12 hours prior. I just wouldn't want for the OP to wait until one or two hours prior and then be disappointed. Most of the time I am riding in the sold out FC car I myself have used an upgrade.

I just wanted to disagree with the assumption that Sunday trains are not that full or that it might be easier to upgrade on a Sunday. Personally, in my experience, I find mid-day week-day trains to be less full than Sunday trains on the acela when traveling between BOS - NYP.

I agree, mid-day weekday trains are a good bet at least on the north end. Somehow I can never quite guess reliably what will happen in the south end. Some odd meeting of a Government Agency or even of a large Financial House in New York or Washington can unpredictably wipe out availability on random Acelas. And at other times there could be ample availability in FC.
