73 made it to Charlotte okay, but 74 (its turn) is canceled. 75 is out and running to Charlotte, seemingly okay. They'll run 76 (75's turn). 77 and 78 are canceled. The Twitter feed gives us this information, but didn't say what caused all of these last minute cancellations. What caused them?

Looks like engine failure in Charlotte on 74. Since that set turns at RGH back to 77/78, that trip is also canceled. Bus service is being provided. 76 is bringing 74's set back to RGH.

Now THAT's interesting. 74 has an engine on each end. Either one of them can be isolated so that the train can run with one operating engine. What kind of an engine failure was it?

Yes....if only one engine failed, that would be an option....however...........

Here's another question. Instead of cancelling 77/78, why didn't they just take another train set from the yard and run with that?

Maybe I can find out tomorrow.

jb

Maybe that train had a problem as well.

I talked to the crew of 76 which is the train that picked up 74.

When 73 was on its way to Charlotte, one engine died and they continued with the other one still running. After they got to Charlotte and were preparing to turn for 74, the other engine died.

As for 77, there were three engines available in the yard which could be used to make up a train. One was sidelined because of a vehicle strike from a couple of days ago. Another was sidelined because it was involved with a trespasser fatality the day before. We don't know about the third engine, but these trains all run with one on each end so they don't have to be turned at either end, so that was pretty much the ballgame.
