From what I have read, it sounds like the unions may have legitimate grievances about working conditions, but are not getting much support from the Liberal/NDP government who you would think would be their natural allies.
The leader of the NDP (similar to Britain's Labour Party) held another press conference yesterday to state he would not support back-to-work legislation, as you suggest, and would force an election if necessary. Both the government and the opposition Conservative party are now between the proverbial "rock and hard place" when it comes to further action. The Conservatives would dearly love an election but know that supporting the Liberals in this case would be in the best interest of the country. As my friend @Bob Dylan said above, it will be time to grab some popcorn and watch the fireworks come Monday, unless some progress is made in negotiations over the weekend.
