I'm in 30th with 30 minutes until 2158 to BOS departs. I got here at 9:00, expecting to use an FC upgrade coupon, but found out at the ticket window that today is a blackout date. Doh!!! :(

Moreover, so is Monday, my scheduled return! DOH!!!!!

(It's still a great weekend trip, though, as I'm getting to visit lots of old friends from college this weekend in particular. So it's not like I'm kicking myself for traveling this weekend.)

So, naturally I grabbed an NEC schedule, my iPhone, and a pen, and fifteen minutes later I'd found two better options :) My Monday Acela was in the second bucket, and I found a Tuesday Acela (coupon eligible) at low bucket. That's option one, and being that I'm presently "at leisure" and stating with a fellow "at leisure" friend in Boaron, staying an extra day is neither problem nor expense, saves me $23, and gives me a shot at upgrading! Good deal, so I went to a ticket agent and easily made the change. (And still haven't printed the ticket, in case I later decide I prefer the second option.)

I discovered i could also return Monday, taking a BOS-NYP regional, have dinner in New York, and take a second NYP-PHL regional late that evening. Total fare is cheaper still, and it gives me legs 3&4 of the B2G1 right then and there. Negatives are far fewer AGR and likely never using these upgrade coupons before they expire. But a potential positive is that there's someone i'd like to see in New York if she happens to be free for dinner... :) And having fulfilled the B2G1 I can take cheaper adventures to WAS and NYP over the next month, adding to the saving; and $40 in savings is 1000 AGR on Keystones, so I'm not really losing the AGR/$ ratio....

So a potential downer of a morning really turned out quite well!!! And I got a small Amtrak adventure before even leaving the station. And now I'm queued for boarding...

Excellent example of being flexible when you have time to do so. Of course, to be a regular Amtrak traveler you must have some measure of flexibility. Thanks for giving us ideas on how to make "lemonaide"!

Here's another tip for how to be flexible: I booked today's PHL-BOS and Monday's BOS-PHL as separate reservations. Just in case I needed to change my return for some reason, so I wouldn't be messed up by having already printed the ticket if I needed to change plans in Boston or if I found a lower bucket fare for Monday in the week between when I booked and today. And that added flexibility I gave myself really paid off by making this morning's transactions much, much simpler.
