Sorry, a very simple question...I want to get two one-way tickets with points. Can I get one for me and one for a friend? Or can I only reedem them if I am using them?

You can redeem them for others, if your booking a Sleeper room the points cover two passengers.

For example, I just redeemed a roomette (the normal 20,000) from Flagstaff, Arizona to Columbus, Wisconsin via Los Angeles and Portland, OR.

I'm going from Flagstaff to Minneapolis, My friend is getting on in Los Angeles going to Columbus, told it all to Amtrak and their fine with it (no extra points to bring a friend along).

Yup. When you call AGR, just let them know you'll have someone with you. They'll add their name to your reservation. My boyfriend and I do this every time we travel.

Have fun!

But if you're going coach, you will have to do two separate redemptions.... which is why sleeper redemptions with two passsengers for the same number of points as one are normally a much better use of points than coach seats. And if it's a bedroom, even more people can go for one points redemption.

He said he's going from NYC to DC, so either in a NER or an Acela - no sleeper.
Yeah I figured that out. My implication was, save the points for when you can get most value from them, and pay for coach fare.
That is assuming that an NER traveler has any interest in LD travel. I know lots and lots of people on the NER who love amtrak for BOS - NYC but would never, ever consider a LD trip.

  Say it ain't so!

I may have to restart my heart after hearing that!

The Crescent goes from NYC to DC, but I don't know whether they sell sleepers for that segment. ?? We've only traveled south of DC on it.

For future reference, in addition to covering two or more people on one sleeper AGR redemption, all meals in the dining car are included for everyone.

The Crescent (and most LD trains) are "R" only from NYP-WAS and "D" only from ALX-NYP. No local passengers carried.
That's true, but one can book a roomette NYP-ALX on the Crescent and leave the train in Washington. With points this is much cheaper (and in my opinion much better) than two AGR redemptions for Acela.

I agree that this is a great redemption and better than acela. :)

Great info. I didn't know a roomette covered 2 people, tickets and meals. Was gonna use points for a solo roomette trip WPB to NYP, but I'll just go coach and save the roomette for when I have a travel companion!
