I know Alan will know this easily but I don't. A friend of mine wants to take a one way trip to Miami from Cleveland. I'm going with him as far as DC. He's a newcomer to Amtrak. I am a member of AGR and have the AGR card. Can I pay for his fare on my AGR credit card so I can earn the points? If so, then can I also use my AAA discount for his ticket since I'm paying for it? I can't see why Amtrak would have a problem with it.

Yes and Yes. Amtrak coukd care less about where the money comes from, assuming they aren't fraudulent charges. With that said, use your AGR card too and get the points.

You can pay for the ticket with your AGR card for the entire trip, you will get 1 point for $1 spent for both tickets! If yall are in a sleeper from MIA-WAS

you can get credit for the points if its in your name! From WAS-Cleveland you would not get the points unless, and I never recommend violating any rules or policies  ,the ticket was in your name and your friend can pass for you!Of course if they check IDs in WAS,which they probably will, this will not work, your other option is to ride the CL with him from WAS-CLEV with the tickets again paid by you with your AGR MC and,if in a sleeper, you would get the points plus any for your return trip by yourself!

Yes I have done this before not sure about the discount though. And to correct the guest you would get 2 points on every dollar spent since its an amtrak transaction.

EDITED: To tired to think clearly

The AAA discount is good for anyone in the party! And if you do get a sleeper, list the person who has the AGR account first on the reservation! ALL the AGR points for the room charge goes to that account. If that person does not have an AGR account, those points are lost! Even if the other person has an AGR account!

so I get $2 on every $ i spend  so if was to spend 150$ on a ticket AGR will PAY ME 300$

and i thought it was 2 points on every $.

P.S im joking. just a FYI.

Correct routing is CLE-WAS-MIA

" A friend of mine wants to take a one way trip to Miami from Cleveland. I'm going with him as far as DC."

The rule is

American Automobile Association (AAA) members, their spouses and thier dependents are eligible to receive a 10% discount on the lowest available adult rail fare for Amtrak travel.
So if the other person isn't a spouse or dependent, they aren't technically eligible. (And the "thier" typo is from Amtrak.com.)

Maybe "technically" no, but my sister gets a AAA discount when she goes with me - and she isn't a AAA member, my spouse or my dependent! Just make sure that the person who goes to the ticket window (if you don't pick them up at a QT) is the AAA member! ;) And you can enter the same AAA membership number for everyone when reserving online! ;)

 no big deal I was wrong what can I say its happened once or twice no need to fly off the handle about it.
How dare you use that 3-letter word! (The only flying I want to do is on HSR! )

  most people fly right through KIN and wonder gee what was that brown blur. So just latch on to the next Acela you'll take a nice flight
like this dude here

I've done this several times. On my last trip, I paid for the Champaign-New Orleans and New Orleans-Slidell legs for both me and my uncle and got the AAA discount. And I got the points for it. Of course, I stood over him with a baseball bat until he paid me for his share of the trip!
