If you are going to make the train equivalent of aviation's "hundred dollar hamburger" to LAX, you MUST have lunch or dinner at the famous Philippe's restaurant, about a block from LA Union Station. Philippe's claims to have invented the French Dipped sandwiches (classic beef, also available as lamb and turkey), which regardless of the claim are very good, and their chocolate cream pie is also great.
 
Avoid BC on the southbound Surfliner, south of Anaheim. S/B, BC is at the head end of the train, and regulations require the engineer be on the horn almost continuously when along the beach, which is over an hour of horn-blowing.
Actually many railfans would pony up the extra money to ride in BC just because of the horn.
