Is coach seating on the LSL assigned ? I board in CLE. On the CL seating is always assigned. Most of the time I have to kick someone out of our seats because of them spreading out. However never had a real problem. Just wondering, dont like to be split up all the way to Chicago.

when i went last year it was reserved but not assigned, not been on an Amtrak route yet with assigned seating.

It really confused me at first i'm far to used to assigned seating  but agree its annoying when you have to ask people to move out of your seat

We took the LSL about 3 or 4 weeks ago from Cleveland to Chicago (and back eventually). On the way out, we just found available seats. There were plenty. On the way from Chicago to Cleveland, they just kind of group you according to your stop, but again, nothing assigned or anything.

Normally you choose your own seats within the assigned car. Once, though, we were given seat numbers when boarding westbound at WTI; I think the train was unusually full that day.

From my experience, the conductors like to assign seats if the train is completely full. That way, people won't end up sitting in the lounge car because of the lack of seats (a la my last trip on the Pennsylvanian). Assigning seats also allows groups or families to stay together rather than be spread out across the car.

I've been on an assigned-seating train, however it was the Southwest Chief. When I take the Pere Marquette from GRR to CHI it's unassigned, and just grouped by car.
