I am trying to remember if I need to bring shampoo or do they have little bottles? I guess push comes to shove I could just use the bar of soap that is supplied.

Bring your own-Some have soft soap, that I suppose could be used as shampoo, and on the Coast Starlight and Empire Builder, they give you an ammenity bag, that I assume has shampoo (i don't recall, I think I left mine on board, and never opened it, I assume it was a shampoo and toiletry bag!), but on the other trains, it's BYOS.

At minimum there should be small bars of soap either in the shower room or outside on the luggage rack; while not fancy hi-line soap it gets the job done. I always bring my own shampoo and conditioner. Of course you can always reuse the bars the shower pigs who never clean up after themselves leave piled in there :angry2:

All I remember, are the small bars of soap. For my trips, there is usually one in the roomette, and extras in or near the shower room. No shampoo dispensers in the shower itself.

Feel free to bring your own. And feel even more free to bring them in as large of a container as you wish!

When the shower is a mess my tips to the SCA go down the drain.

Take some of that body wash (like Axe) in the squeeze jar ... doubles as soap and shampoo, and works great for one nite.

I do seem to remember one train, that DID have those liquid dispensers in the shower itself....Can't recall, was a while back, would have been on the Empire Builder, or on the Crescent. I remember being surprised by it, hadn't seen it before-I think it was the EB, it had a nice curved glass shower door with a logo on it too, much nicer than those normal curtains. Haven't seen anythign like that since, especially on my normal train, the Texas Eagle, where just having water seems to be a luxery.......

It's best to bring your own, especially if you like a particular type.

That said, the SCA is given a few small hotel sized bottles of shampoo to give to passengers who forgot their own. But it is a very limited supply and they don't always get it either. On the EB, and I believe the CS now, they do provide small velvet bags of toiletries to those in sleepers. Each room should have one kit.

The lounge car menu shows sundries such as soap, toohbrushes, etc. for sale also but availabilty is questionable.

As for the soap left there by "shower pigs" - or is it maybe by people who are not at their best behavior after being rattled around and trying to get dressed in that tiny room, keeping their clean clothes dry in the process.

I do not feel that I am likely to become infected with some pig's disease by simply picking up a bar of soap and dropping it in the trash can - so the next user won't have to endure such extreme hardships.

Would also recommend you try to shower when train is stopped for extended periods. Otherwise you can get bounced around some times.
Yep, very good point! I try to time mine even for the shorter stops. Any time the train isn't moving, is a good time to shower. ;)

I'd bring my own just to be sure, especially if you have certain products you like. There are ample bars of soap but you may or may not have the small shampoo containers. It's nice to have your own hair "stuff" plus not have to worry about only bringing 3 oz. or less!
