I have a guest reward freebie on the CS and CZ for July. Based on a good recommendation from someone at this forum, I changed my res so that I come into Martinez as opposed to Sac. I note on the newly sent res that the agent now has me in Room C (on both trains) instead of D and E. I'm wondering why since it's only one more stop to Martinez. It seems to me that someone had warned against room C but I don't remember exactly. Should I ask for D / E or is C the same size/layout? Thanks for any advice!

Pretty much the same. The only room different would be A which is very slightly smaller because of being at the end of the car and the hallway turn to the vestibule. Otherwise, the rooms are all the same except orientation of sofa which generally cannot be determined before-hand on the superliners.

Hope you have a great trip.

Some people prefer room E since its on the end. This means that you only share a wall with one room, and the other wall is the hallway/stairway. However, some folks find that there can be noise at the coffee maker so don't like E.

Personally I think E is the best, but I am fine with any bedroom!

Here is a diagram of the sleeper cars. If you look at the Superliner, you will the location of 'C' Bedroom. Just remember, the bedrooms will be to the left at the top of the stairs. We haven't been in 'C' yet, but will be soon. I'm sure it will just fine. We have ridden in 'E' and 'D', and prefer 'E', but some don't like it because it's too close to the stairs/coffee station. We've never had a problem with it. Have a great trip!

Thanks all, for the reassurance. I'm looking forward to it! We've had the roomette a few times but never the room. :)

One more question! :)

I am now changing from the CS to the CZ in Martinez. There's only a 2.5 hour wait between trains. What happens if the CS is 3 hours late??

Thanks

You need to monitor the progress of your CS and if you're running late, then you must consider getting off at an earlier stop. I would seek out the help of the conductor for the best place to transfer. Additionally, I would ask that conductor to warn the crew of the CZ that you'll be boarding further up the line so that they don't resell your room when you no show in MTZ.

Speaking of room letters, we've been assigned room A on the SL from Houston to Los Angeles. It looks to be somewhat truncated as well as next to the sliding door to the next car.

Did we get "disadvantaged"?

I've never had room A, but my understanding is that there is very minimal difference except the room is arranged just a little different with the bathroom being in a different position. One of the advantages of A is that it does not share a sliding door with another room which can make it a little quieter. If your door is closed, I doubt you will actually hear the door at the end of the car.

If you got A, then the train is either sold out, or you got the next to last Bedroom and the only other Bedroom left is still an A room. Those are the last rooms to go.

And I wouldn't worry too much. Yes, as noted, the layout is a bit odd and the one corner is slightly cut. But otherwise the room is the same as the others.

So if you get off at SAC, what happens to your luggage, or does all baggage going east of SAC, get taken off at SAC, say for example you are going from PDX to OMA

Well if you checked your bags to a point east of SAC, and showed that ticket to the person doing the bag checking, they yes Amtrak will transfer the bags in SAC without regard to whether you're going past SAC to make the connection and without regard if you have to bail earlier than expected.

SAC is the transfer point for all baggage, without regard to where you booked the transfer for yourself.

Thank you both for your replies.

I booked the room with AGR points right before the redemptions were increased so it's probably 2 months ago.

I think I'll check the bedroom more closely in the future.

FWIW, the entire train is sold out as of this morning (leaving Monday, 5/28).

Room C should be good because it is in between the other rooms, so I guess there's no extra good or ad. I usually travel Roomette.

Edit: error
