I just noticed the headline "Silver Stars Edge Mercury 92-91", and did a double-take... first, I hadn't realized there was a sports team named the Silver Stars (they're San Antonio's women's basketball team), and second, because the score are the numbers of the northbound and southbound trains!

So, how many other sports teams and Amtrak trains share names? College teams count. The (St Louis or Arizona) Cardinals, the University of Illinois Illini, the University of Michigan Wolverines, and ... any others? (I can think of a few "partial credit" examples, like the Philadelphia Eagles and the Texas Eagle, or the Kansas City Chiefs and the Southwest Chief, but those don't quite count in my book....)

And, for extra credit, can anyone find evidence that a sports team which shares its name with a train played a game where the scores were the train numbers? :)

While not Amtrak, the old Aztec Eagle used to run from Laredo,Tx. to Mexico City, it did connect with the MOPAC Eagle in Laredo and the train Number was #! which some Philly fans would say is appropriate! (but not this Cowboy fan!)

If Im not mistaken the nickname of San Diego State is the Aztecs? Also there are/were several teams nicknamed the Zephyrs but dont know if there are/were any in California? Are there any teams named Cascades in Washinton, it seems logical?

Let's see here...

Offhand, the NHL has the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Philadelphia (not Heartland) Flyers, though you'd never see those trains' numbers as hockey scores.

Googling around for ALL teams:

Manasota Meteors baseball in Sarasota, FL.

Philadelphia Keystones baseball (1884).

Saskatoon Crescents hockey (1923-24).

The University of Central Missouri calls its athletic teams The Mules.

The Florida Marlins have a Triple-A team in New Orleans called The Zephyrs.

A semi-pro baseball team in FL is called the Sunrise Sunsets.

There's a Starlights synchronized skating team near Chicago.

In WA there's a Tacoma Cascades baseball team.

And though not Amtrak, but a fave rail connection of mine, when the L.A. Dodgers were still in Brooklyn the team was called the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers for a time before the nickname was shortened to Dodgers. Other predecessor names included "Bridegrooms" and "Superbas."

You could also throw in the Washington Capitals of the NHL (Capitol Corridor aka Capitols) and the New Orleans Zephyr's (California Zephyr) of AAA baseball's Pacific Coast League.

Great research, Whooz!

Ok, I gotta ask: is synchronized skating a competition with scores? Is it possible to score a 13 or 14? It's the one sport on here I'm just completely unfamiliar with.

Since we have a member who used to be an Ice Capade hand (who now lives in Hawaii!!!!) Im sure he will have some info about this?

If not, some of our Great White North members (thats anyone North of Dallas! ) will have the poop! (no pun intended!)

Yeah, it's a scored "sport," and it looks like an 11 is possible for individual skaters, but a 14 would have to be an accumulated team total (a very low one). My only interest in ice skating is how Dorothy Hamill and Katarina Witt are lookin' these days (both good!).

U.S. Figure Skating

In the fall Round Rock Little Leauge there are teams named the Sunsets and the Nationals! If they play and the score is

2-1 guess that might qualify?? Like Whooz said, the fiigures I watch are the ones on the female skaters (the mature ones, not the youngsters! My grandfather knew nothing about Ice skating but he talked about Sonia Heyne??sp) like she had been an old girlfriend!

Texas Eagle and the Philadelphia Eagles go together. Then again that's coming from a Die-Hard Eagles fan and a Die-Hard Cowboys hater. At least the Eagles use Acela to get from Washington, New York, and the every once and a while New England game. Them Cowgirls use planes.

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!!

I know you're all not forgetting about the Arizona CARDINALs or the St. Louis CARDINALs, correct? Ahem. yes the train operates on the other side of the country but still, I thought ya'll would have gotten that one from the start. i googled for a score of 50-51 but no luck.

Nobody forgot... The OP has them right in the first post of this thread.

Then Stanford University should be added as they are "The Cardinal" no plural.

The Capitol Limited could take you to a Washington Capitals game.

The National Limited would not have taken you directly to a Washington Nationals game, however, even if they had been in existence at the same time.

It's worth noting, and reminding, that prior to the advent of jet air travel riding trains was how professional sport teams got around the country to play their games.

One could even argue that railroads made national sports leagues possible, by allowing teams to more easily venture beyond local confines to vie against other teams in cities that would have required tough and lengthy travel under animal power to reach before railroads came along.

Weren't a lot of early stadiums and arenas located either virtually on top of, or at least close to, railroad stations?

Aloha

yes for Scenery/Cargo/exhibit delivery.
Are there anymore left besides MSG in NYP and whatever the Boston Celtic/Bruin Arena is now called @ Boston North Station??
It's not on top of, but Seattle has a few venues that are right next to rail. Sounder even runs special trains for certain events.

Isn't the AA Center In Dallas served by a TRE station right in the parking lot? Oakland Colisseum, Coors Field in Denver, and I'm sure more then a few that I'm forgetting.
