I'm planning a trip that requires a transfer at the New Orleans station, and a 15 hour wait until the transfer arrives. The station says it closes at 11PM, so do I have no choice but to get a hotel room? Is there no 24 hour waiting area like in an airport or bus station? Thanks in advance.

If you don't want to get a hotel room you could always hang out at Cafe du Monde. Its open 24 hours.

In fact, the NOL station is also the bus station. (Amtrak uses the right half and Greyhound uses the left half.) But I agree that if you don't want to get a hotel room, you could always spend time on Bourbon Street or take a cab to the casino!

A 15 hour layover waiting at a train or bus station or airport is a marathon. I would shop for an economy hotel on Orbitz, Priceline or other web site, get off your feet, and take a shower before you continue on.

Ride the Streetcars. They run until at least 2:00am. The St. Charles Ave. Line stops one block away from the station on Carondelet.

Unless the great flood moved either the train station or Carondelet St., it's more like 3 to 3-1/2 blocks walk depending on how one counts things.

And while I've walked from NOUPT to the St. Charles streetcars, I'm not so sure that I'd want to be doing that walk at 2:00 AM.
