Hi,

I will be traveling by myself in a roomette (on the California Zephyr, Coast Starlight and Empire Builder) this July and was thinking of taking my medium size bag in the roomette with me. As I am 5'11" using the top bunk for storage might not be handy, (assume I'd hit my head during day time) and so was wondering if anyone could tell me how wide/deep the steps to the top bunk are. My bag might fit on there...

I've not been able to guesstimate from the countless YouTube video's so far and this will be my first Amtrak trip.

Thanks,

Cintha

I have an overnight bag that sits on it well. The dimensions are about 16.5" x 12.0" x 10.0". So I would guess the step is approx 16" deep and 10" wide.

I can fit my carry-on (24 x 16 x 7) and backpack (school-sized) on the top step and set my purse on the bottom step. There's also a closet for coat, shoes, towels, laptop bag, etc.

I also use the opposite seat when traveling alone. I usually set my laptop there when I'm not using it.

If you are on a Superliner I, there is a closet to the right as you look into the room, facing the window, but on the Superliner II, the closet has been replaced by a hanging bag area. I have found that my roller bag fits fine. I even use the wide strap to keep it in place. I also place the roller suitcase horizontal on its side on the step, with my backpack on top of it. On longer trips, if I take a larger bag, I place it on the downstairs shelf, then load/unload into a carry on bag what ever I need for the next couple days. I pack my suitcase so it is easy to pull out items and place others back in. I have my toilet items bag nearest an easy access zipper so instead of taking it to my room, I pick it up on the lower level as I am going to the shower and use the first bathroom across which has a changing table I put down to put my items on as I get ready after my shower.

22 inches long and 12.5 inches tall is my American Tourister hard side one-suiter, vintage 1980's, but it fits wonderfully on the top step of the Superliner Roomettes as well as within the Viewliner Roomettes. It is the perfect piece of luggage for in-room Amtrak use. As I grow older, however, I wish its weight would decrease, being a hard side piece of luggage.

You pull down the top bunk. Now it is within reach. You put your bag on it and push it back up. Never had a problem doing that.

More than that, in the evening, take out your clothes for the next day and put your bag on one side of that top bunk. Lay out those clothes on the bunk. Push it up. In the morning, when you pull down the top bunk, your clothes are neatly laid out for you and aired out.
