Today at Bloomington/Normal, IL we watched the Texas Eagle which stopped for quite a while. We were on the side which has the aisle by the bedrooms' doors. The lower level of the train's sleeping cars differed! At least one had no wheelchair-accessible bedroom window (or any indication there had been one) and the family room window and roomette windows were in a common space with about four tables (a couple of them on each side) with facing seating as in a cafe-type arrangement. On one or two of the tables there were trainmen-like briefcases and such, as I recall. No people were in the space at that time. What gives?

Crew transition dorm. Was that the only sleeper on the train?
I believe it's a crew quarter or a transdorm

The Eagle is running the full Sleeper as 421 (CHI/LAX) and the Transdorm as the 21 Sleeper with 8 Roomettes.
Perhaps I missed it, but it seems that all the explanations given ignore part of the description of the car.

I don't think so....I believe they are all roomette....There may be some differences in how the lower level looks, usually an H room and "facilities" at one end, and a couple of different setups at the other....
On the upper level they are all roomettes except at the end of hall where you go down the transition stairs there is a room that was built for the Chief of OBS. It is about the size of a bedroom but has only one bed and no facilities. On the lower level some have a Handicap room and some don't. The ones that don't have will instead have an extra ladies lounge IIRC. The other end of LL, on all the Dorms, is the employee lounge with 4 booths and some (now) empty space.
