I have heard that they still run one set of single-level cars for the Surfliner. Is this true? If yes, does it appear on regularly on a series of trains or is it more random? Are there any differences with Business Class? Thanks.

It operates on an alternating day basis on 761/790, and 599/572/583, though if unanticipated disruptions occur, the set could wind up on other rotations.

Busness class uses the club end of a club-dinette, plus another single-level coach (Amfleet I business class, if available, otherwise a regular coach car; but then again, the seating in Surfliner business class is the same as seating in Surfliner coach anyway).

Actually, no, the business class in at least the club-dinette features the old Metroliner luxury seats with footrests and legrests and is worth the extra money. I used to take bc when going between SLO and LA when the single-level consist was used all the time for that route. If you can ever be sure of which train the single-level consist will be used for ahead of time, then bc is worth it!

But yes, the regular Surfliner bc is no more comfortable than Surfliner coach, and nine times out of ten, the Surfliner consist will include a Superliner coach which is WAY more comfortable than Surfliner bc and at no extra cost!!

Are they not running the single level set anymore on 798 and 799?

It's been awhile since I have done a Surfliner run...

It was a nice round-trip I did between LAX and Grover Beach (stop is within walking distance of ocean)... but wow... not very nice views of the Pacific through the dirty windows of the Horizon BC/cafe car.

There is no more 799. It became 790 in January when the run was extended from SLO all the way to San Diego as a thru train. No more bad connection in Los Angeles. So that means that the single-level consist can end up as any of a number of Surfliner times, depending on where it starts and ends up on any given day. It's not necessarily on either 761 (the new number for the a.m. LA-SLO run) or 790, depending on the day.

I can't see where your post contradicts anything that I said. The seats in Surfliner business class are the same as regular Surfliner coach. Club-dinette, Amfleet/Horizon coach, and Amfleet I business class, are altogether different layouts and do have differences.

LIghten up dude. I was clarifying for the OP that bc in the dinette is different from the regular Surfliner. YOur post wasn't specific on that point and someone unfamiliar with the Surfliner and Horizon consists could infer that that all bc seating is the same as Surfliner coach, especially now that Amtrak calls all SD-SLO runs Surfliners even with the different equipment.

I'm sorry if you took this as something personal. I was trying to be helpful. Sheesh.

Anybody know the actual consist? I thought Surfliner BC had PTVs.
I believe it is during the normal season:

Engine

Amfleet 2 being used as BC

Horizon Cafe/Business Class with nice 2x1 seats

Amfleet 1

Amfleet 1

Amfleet 1

(There might be a fourth Amfleet 1, but I'm not sure)

Engine

During the racing season:

Engine

Amfleet 2 BC

Horizon Cafe/BC with 2x1

Amfleet 1

Amfleet 1

Amfleet 1

Amfleet 1

Amfleet 1

Amfleet 1

Amfleet 2 BC

Engine

I'm pretty sure of the order for the race season train. I know for a fact that there are usually nine cars, 2 being the 2x2 BC cars with longer legroom that's why I assume Amfleet 2. Although the 2x1 seats in the BC/Cafe are fantastic, I would never ride in that car during racing season because I have seen the line for bloody's stretching halfway into the next car... it's BAD

The business class is an Amfleet I 60-seater.

It's very rare that an Amfleet II ventures west of Chicago.

What a waste to remove PTVs from the PS cars! If they did not plan on using them they should not have installed them in the first place. Also, the Amfleet I is a 62-seater. I'm not sure if there used to be 62-seat Amfleet I Coaches ar were they 60-seat? Not that big of a difference.

On the regular trainsets, there is an engine, BC car, usually 3 coaches and either another engine or a NPCU. Lately I've seen Dash8, P42 and F59PHI, used as engines and another engine or a NPCU (90208). A while back I've even seen a Cascades F40 NPCU.

Usually when you start a post with "Actually, no" that indicates disagreement no was scratching my head too trying to figure out what Trogdor said that was incorrect.

I was just uploading my photos at Santa Barbara where I photographed the train (and than rode it later that day) that month it the following consist northbound (reverse southbound), a train of alternating Amfleets/Horizons:

Dash 8-32

Horizons Coach

Amfleet-I Coach

Horizons Coach

Amfleet-I Coach

Horizons Cafe/Dinette

Amfleet-I Buisinessclass

F40 NPCU Cabbage
